Mark Moore and Nancy Pfund Named to National Geographic Society Board of Trustees

WASHINGTON (Jan. 8, 2016)-Mark Moore, managing director of ThornTree Capital Partners, and Nancy Pfund, founder and managing partner of DBL Partners, have been appointed to the National Geographic Society Board of Trustees. They join 17 other trustees who are leaders in science, education, law, business, finance, government and public service.

The National Geographic Society is a global nonprofit organization and one of the world's largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations. The Society funds hundreds of research and conservation projects around the globe each year and works to inspire, illuminate and teach through scientific expeditions, award-winning journalism and education initiatives.

National Geographic Society is fortunate to add the counsel, expertise and experience of Mark Moore and Nancy Pfund to our board of trustees, said Society President and CEO Gary Knell. Their impressive records of leadership and service in the fields of media, education and finance will be instrumental to the Society's success in the coming years.

Moore is the founder and managing partner of ThornTree Capital Partners, a global equity investment firm in Boston, and is also the chairman and a founding member of the National Geographic Society's International Council of Advisors. Moore was formerly a managing director at Bain Capital, where he led public market investing in media, Internet and telecommunications as well as public investing across Asia. Prior to Bain Capital, Moore worked with McKinsey & Company and small entrepreneurial ventures.

Moore has sat on the boards of directors of several Internet, media and consumer companies. He is a recognized thought leader in global media, investing in content, distribution and technology companies in most major markets in the world. Moore is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Harvard Business School and lives in Massachusetts with his wife and three children.

Pfund is founder and managing partner of DBL Partners, a venture capital firm that is a leading player in the growing field of impact investing and has helped to reveal the power of venture capital to promote social change and environmental improvement. She currently sponsors or sits on the board of directors of several companies, including SolarCity and The Muse, and also sponsored Tesla Motors and Pandora prior to their public offering. She is chair of the Advisory Council of the Bill Lane Center for the American West at Stanford University, a member of the Advisory Board of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a member of the Advisory Board of the UC Davis Energy Efficiency Center.

Prior to founding DBL Investors, Pfund was a managing director in Venture Capital at JPMorgan and previously worked at Intel, the State of California, Stanford University and the Sierra Club. Pfund was featured in FORTUNE World's Top 25 Eco-Innovators.

In 1988, President George H. W. Bush appointed Pfund as a charter member of the National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology, and in 1999, she was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the congressional Web-Based Education Commission.
