Internet.org project correlates simulated Facebook application use cases using a test agent with Ericsson network insights to drive up to 70 percent network performance for app coverage improvement on XL Axiata network
New White Paper chronicles joint research, testing and optimization undertaken
Findings delivered by Facebook, Ericsson and XL Axiata executives at mobile efficiency Developer Workshop at an Internet.org event hosted by Facebook in Indonesia
As part of Internet.orgs mission to bring affordable internet access to the two-thirds of the world not yet connected, Facebook and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), in conjunction with XL Axiata, have created a new methodology to measure and improve end-to-end network performance using simulated Facebook application use cases. Network-wide optimization implemented through the joint project delivered up to 70 percent improvement in app coverage.

With the methodology set forth in this white paper, we have a model for improving network performance that can be applied globally by mobile network operators. This will help ensure we have more efficient use of existing network capacity and resources, which is key to delivering on our mission to close the connectivity gap.
In Indonesia, 75 percent of users are on 2G GSM/EDGE networks, yet the country has the fourth-largest Facebook user base in the world. The changing market realities in the country are reflected in XL Axiatas network, where, in 2013, data traffic rose by 142 percent. More than half of the operators 62.9 million subscribers are data users and a majority of those use Facebook, according to XL Axiata estimates.

We believe app coverage is essential and correlating Facebook application use cases with network-wide statistics has proven to be an innovative and efficient way to detect and address network optimization opportunities.
Working with XL Axiata, Facebook and Ericsson created a new methodology to measure and improve end-to-end network performance. The joint project developed a framework for evaluating user key performance indicators (KPI) based on simulated Facebook application use cases using a test agent and correlated these KPIs with network statistics. Through this process, user-impacting issues were identified and addressed throughout the network. The resultant optimizations improved app coverage by up to 70 percent:
Number of connections completed within three seconds improved up to 70 percent
Time to content improved up to 70 percent
Upload time improved up to 50 percent

On October 13, Facebook is hosting an Internet.org event, a mobile efficiency Developer Workshop at the Four Seasons hotel in Jakarta. Executives from Facebook, Ericsson and XL Axiata will share findings from the project and the resultant White Paper with the audience of application developers and news media.
Facebook and Ericsson are among the founding members of internet.org. The companies have also announced the creation of a joint innovation lab supporting the Internet.org initiative. The Internet.org Innovation Lab, an Ericsson-Facebook collaboration, currently under development at Facebooks Menlo Park campus, will provide an environment and expertise for optimizing applications, networks, and services for the next five billion Internet users.
