Exploring the Wide World of Marketing: Emerging Leaders Profile on Jordyn Davis

Jordyn started contributing and sharing ideas on Day 1, and I hope she will continue into her career with that same level of enthusiasm and excitement. I've enjoyed having her on the team.

For the past 4 months, 10 students from NC Central University have been interning in Capitol Broadcasting divisions through the inaugural Emerging Leaders Program. A partnership between CBC and Leadership Triangle, the program combines hands on learning in departments aligned to their interests along with workshops led by LT coaches. The program will culminate with a graduation ceremony on December 16. In the final weeks leading up to that conclusion, Capcom is profiling the individual outstanding students.

Jordyn Davis is interning with WRAL Digital in the Marketing department. Davis is a senior at NC Central, pursuing a major in Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations.

WRAL Digital Marketing Director Laura Worthington has been mentoring the aspiring sports publicist in her CBC division.

Jordyn has been a valuable addition to the Digital Marketing team, said Worthington. Right away, she was engaged in our conversations about how to improve campaigns and grow our digital audience.

Worthington's department touches a wide swath of events, programs and digital pursuits, giving Davis a variety of opportunities to explore.

Jordyn has worked alongside me but also with other members of my team to learn new skills or help with different tasks, said Worthington. Marketing' means a lot of different things depending on who you talk to, so providing her with access to as many of those areas as possible.

From the WRAL Voters' Choice Awards to HighSchoolOT Honors, the gamut of things Worthington's team coordinates and promotes is far-reaching.

She's done reporting, researched emerging tactics, worked an event, written a press release and received training on SEO and design basics, said Worthington of the things to which Davis has been exposed. I've encouraged her to keep learning, push yourself outside of your comfort zone, stay curious about whatever you're working on (not just completing tasks), and know it's ok to ask for help. We've all been there.

In addition to job tasks and specific knowledge, Worthington has worked to share the nuances of what it means to be part of a team and a greater company.

I've always subscribed to the idea that to be a leader, you don't have to have a specific title, said Worthington. You can lead from anywhere in an organization and make a big impact if you have the right mindset. Jordyn started contributing and sharing ideas on Day 1, and I hope she will continue into her career with that same level of enthusiasm and excitement. I've enjoyed having her on the team.

Having Davis learning in her department has been a growth opportunity for those around her as well. Worthington values the experience the Emerging Leaders Program has given her, her staff and their intern.

Many college students have internship experiences, and that is often encouraged or even required by schools, she said. The opportunity to gain hands-on experience at a locally-based media organization AND leadership development and coaching from Leadership Triangle that's special. Not only does the student benefit from the program, but CBC does too. Expanding the diversity of voices at the table makes us better as an organization and helps us better serve our diverse audience.
