Intels technology makes possible an immersive experience for Dunkirk Christopher Nolans latest film offers the viewer a virtual reality experience developed by Practical Magic.

Immersive experiences require an enormous computing power, new sensations, and technologies for capture on PC and the cloud, access premium content, and huge amounts of data flows - extraordinary progress that Intel provides successfully. To deliver the best content to audiences around the world, Intel works closely with Hollywood studios, producers and creators of content and developers to establish some innovative partnerships to carry beyond what is possible.

Dunkirk VRE places the viewer in each of the three perspectives of film: land, sea and air. With personalized content available as video 360 and high resolution within this VRE, spectators can participate in an epic cinematic storytelling about the essential battle of Dunkirk which took place during the second world war, to enjoy this experience just before the premiere of the film on July 21.

In the usual process of post-production for this kind of immersive experiences, workflows are optimized for standard HD media and 4K. To realize the immersive experience of Dunkirk VREproduction teams worked with about 40 times this resolution. The computer demands of this process required all stations work, blade servers, video cards, software stacks and storage systems to operate with maximum efficiency. A slow response or a malfunction of the systems could thwart the artists, as well as increasing costs and lose valuable time.

Rendering

For this reason, Practical Magic chose hardware and software based on Intel technologies to create the VRE. The company specialized in VR achieved this milestone in the shortest time possible with the use of server blade Dell M1000E equipped with Intel Xeon processors, to create images in high resolution, with low latency and real-time feel. Intel Xeon embedded in these blade server processors cores conducted a magnificent rendering of multiple processes, while a set of independent rendering with CPU equipped with Intel Core i7 6700K was responsible for processes/single-core rendering.

Practical Magic created this work with Hollywood quality, using Dell Precision workstations, equipped also with processors Intel Xeon. Working with high-fidelity throughout this entire project contents, Visual Artists relied on Intels 10GbE network to increase the speed of the SAN, providing 10GbE to all workstations. Technologies based on Intel architectures used in Dell Precision workstations improved further the creation and the development of workflows, provided access in real-time to high-resolution media throughout the post-production process. Premium content experiences also point out security at the hardware level, from the cloud to client devices. Intel security benefits protected premium content on digital devices, networks and servers, without compromising the user experience.

To carry beyond the technology of virtual reality, the demands of production for the Dunkirk VRE set out top teams, the most advanced software and the most important techniques to comply with the timetable and the creative needs of one of the most talented of Hollywood. From major Hollywood Studios has created Dunkerque and Spider-Man to work with the creators of the most popular content, both established and A.R.
