Cablecast 5..0 Beta Test

I wanted to take a minute to update everyone with what Tightrope's Product Engineering team has been working on. For the last few months, we have been working on Cablecast 5.2.0, and it's now nearly finished. This release includes a totally redesigned Video On Demand system, which will be welcome news to customers new and old.

We had three primary goals for this release:

Better viewer experience: The existing VOD software is tired, it's based on Windows Media technology. Windows Media was hands-down the best option for Video On Demand in 2007 when the existing software was designed. Since then, a few things have changed. Most notably, h.264 and the smart phone have changed how people watch videos. All of that to say, Cablecast needs to support a mobile compatible codec, and videos need to be viewable on Windows, Mac and mobile devices.

Better user experience: We wanted to make it easier for the station operator to see what the VOD server is doing. To this end, we have completely redesigned the Video On Demand user interface, it now gives real-time status information about each show that is being processed. Also, the VOD server now properly handles the cue and length of shows, and will even combine multi-reel shows into a single file.

Better installation experience: Any of our dealers that have ever installed a VOD server can attest to the fact that it's not the most straight-forward installation. We have reduced the number of required configuration steps substantially, and have worked to make the system much more resilient.

We will be starting a beta test of Cablecast 5.2.0 shortly, and are looking for help. In order to participate, you need to own a Cablecast VOD, or Cablecast Pro VOD server. The goal of this beta test is to find and fix as many issues as possible before we release the software to the larger customer base. If you are interested in helping out with the beta test, please be aware that there will be problems. We will be here and ready to help when they do arise. If you're not comfortable with that, please wait for the released software.
