Mamelodi Sundowns set sights on elusive MTN 8 title

PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns would like to kick off the upcoming season by adding the MTN 8 title to their trophy cabinet, according to captain Hlompho Kekana.

Under coach Pitso Mosimane, the nine-time league champions have bagged every domestic cup that's on offer, except the MTN 8, which they last hoisted in its previous incarnation in 2007 back when it was known as the SAA Super Eight.

They have come close to hoisting the trophy on two occasions, in 2008 and 2016, where they finished as runners-up and, according to their skipper, going all the way in the 2019 edition would further underline their status as a dominant force in local soccer.

It would be nice to win the MTN8. At a team like Mamelodi Sundowns we've got the bigger picture which is to win trophies, irrespective of which trophies it is we want to win it.

We want to remembered as the generation that brought so many trophies to Sundowns. It will be nice for us to win it.

Hlompho KekanaThe Tshwane giants fell in the semifinals of the previous edition after crashing out to eventual winners Cape Town City in a two-legged tie.

It was their best showing in the tournament since finishing second in 2016, where they were trashed by Bidvest Wits, who ran out 3-0 victors.

The competition is expected to start early in August with Sundowns pitted against Bloemfontein Celtic, who snuck in to eighth place in the league standings on the final day of the 2018/19 season.
