Jacob Zuma arrives at KZN school in presidential motorcade [video]

Former president Jacob Zuma was on the road on Friday, visiting a high school in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN).

As reported by eNCA reporter, Siphamandla Goge, pupils from J.E Ndlovu High School, in KwaMashu, KZN, ululated at the sight of the presidential motorcade that was transporting the former president.

Why was Jacob Zuma at J.E Ndlovu High School? The high school is supported by the Jacob Zuma Foundation and on Friday, the former president made an appearance to officially introduce chess at the school.

Zuma, through his foundation, hosts chess tournaments in high schools around KZN on an annual basis.

This, according to the foundation, is to foster inclusivity in a sport that sharpens one's wits. The eight annual chess tournament took place in Mandeni, KZN, four months ago.

Do former presidents travel in motorcades? More interestingly, however, was the motorcade Zuma arrived in. Of course, it is general knowledge that a former head of state travels with some form of security detail, wherever he or she goes.

The lifetime perks of a former head of state come as a form of gratitude for services rendered to the nation.

It is a custom that is practiced around the world. Former presidents of the United States still have access to Secret Service protection and the same can be said for many other sovereign states.

How much does this cost the taxpayer? However, it hardly sits well with taxpayers when they see Zuma, who has been linked to the looting of South Africa's public purse, being carried around in five, top-of-the-range, heavily-armoured BMW X5s.

These tailor-made, Security Plus BMW SUVs, according to the Daily Mail, offer protection from artillery as lethal as an AK-47,

Generally priced at an estimated R2-million (110 000 pounds) per car, it can cost the taxpayer as much as R10-million to transport Zuma around.

This excludes maintenance costs, salaries and perks of the bodyguards, as well as fuel for five heavy-duty vehicles.
