*North of the Sun - Feb. 1, 2014 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
This award-winning documentary follows Inge Wegge and J rn Ranum for nine months in the cold Norwegian winter in an isolated and uninhabited bay of a remote, arctic island by the coast of northern Norway. Facing nothing but the vast Atlantic Ocean, they built a cabin out of driftwood and other cast-off materials that washed up on shore, and ate expired food the stores would otherwise have thrown away. The men also brought an unlikely cold-weather accessory - their surfboards. Perhaps the biggest motivation for the arctic adventure, the remote bay holds a well-kept secret: some of the worlds finest surfing waves. English subtitles.
*Punk Syndrome - Feb. 8, 2014 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
This film follows a Finnish punk rock band whose members all are learning disabled and shows the band members using punk music as an outlet to their frustration with everyday things. Last year, the film won the Audience Award in the SXGlobal category at the SXSW Festival in Austin. English subtitles.
Can Eating Insects Save the World? - Feb. 9, 2014 at 8 p.m. PT/11 p.m. ET
This BBC documentary follows food writer Stefan Gates, as he immerses himself in the extraordinary world of hardcore insect eating in a bid to conquer his lingering revulsion of bugs and discover if they really could save the planet.
With 80,000 lbs. of insects to every human, perhaps insects could offer a real solution to the global food crisis - where billions go hungry every day whilst the meat consumption of the rich draws vast amounts of grain out of the global food chain.
*Ballroom Dancer - Feb. 15, 2014 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
Through a unique access to a legendary dancer, Slavik Kryklyvyy, this film takes you deep inside a world at a very personal level. The former world champion is making his comeback with his younger partner and girlfriend Anna Melnikova - a comeback that turns out to be much more painful than he expected. The real competitive world of ballroom dancing, however, is as cruel as it is beautiful. English subtitles.
*Downeast - Feb. 22, 2014 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
Set during an era of U.S. post-industrialization in which numerous factories have been exported, Downeast focuses on a Boston businessmans plan to reopen a local plant in rural Maine as a lobster-packing facility, and rescue the community from the unemployment line.
Link TVs DOC-DEBUT is made possible with a grant from the Millicent and Eugene Bell Foundation.
