KCETs Award-Winning Weekly Series SOCAL CONNECTED Delves Into the World of Comic Cons and Efforts to Keep Women in Costume Safe from Harassment
Burbank, CA - October 16, 2014 - SOCAL CONNECTED, KCETs Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series goes inside the fascinating world of comic book conventions. The growing popularity of comic cons has also triggered cases of harassment of women dressed in comic book character costumes. Reporter Cara Santa Maria explores the culture and recent steps to prevent harassment, as well as the surprising changes in comic book characters themselves as more women artists and writers make their mark on the traditionally male-dominated world of superheroes. Putting on Ayers: The poignant story of Nathaniel Ayers, the homeless musician suffering from mental illness, was captured in a series of columns by L.A. Times writer Steve Lopez and the 2009 movie based on his book The Soloist. What has happened since then? In this moving segment from 2010, Lopez finally succeeds in getting Nathaniel Ayers to play his violin at a special recording session.
First Stop for Foreign Restaurants: What seems like a mom and pop restaurant to Southern Californians may actually be part of large and successful chain from Taiwan, Korea or Guatemala. Why is SoCal the next link in the chain for foreign restaurants looking to expand? Reporter Conor Knighton takes a foreign food tour of Southern California to find out. Inside the World of Muslim American Fashion: Some young Muslim women face a difficult choice. How can they express themselves and remain observant of their religion?
