Do wait a second to see a video on the smartphone? Impossible... I stressed me! A study neuroscientist driven by Ericsson and Vodafone among German users 7 of every 10 respondents stop watching videos if it takes more than 4 seconds to download.

Up to minimum delays and interference can raise the level of tension and stress of the user, repecutir negatively in his faithfulness and even in the brand image of the operator. These are some of the conclusions of a research project developed by Ericsson and Vodafone Germany, who have used neuroscience to study the real opinion of the users of broadband over the poor performance of the network.

The project used electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor the brain activity of 150 users who were volunteers in D sseldorf, Germany.

Asked users who participated in the study that they completed 13 specific tasks in 10 minutes using a smartphone, while simulating a deterioration in the quality of the service. The tasks included common shares, as browsing web pages, view streaming videos and upload selfies. In addition to the EEG, used a team of eye tracking and heart-rate monitor to measure the range of care and the heart rate of the users.

According to the study, consumers have high expectations about the time it takes to have the content, so that even a second late to download a video may cause stress.

72% of users "millenials" (digital natives) of smartphones in Germany lose interest in watching videos on mobile devices if delays exceed the 4 seconds. Whats more: a delay of only two seconds to upload a selfie to Facebook is enough to cause stress.

Digital natives

The younger digital natives turned out to be less tolerant of delays in downloading videos on YouTube; on average, users aged 18-24 stressed is one 38% increase over the age of 35.

Guido Wei brich, director of performance network of Vodafone Germany, says that "study shows how quickly that smartphone users are thwarted when a broadband network is not operating optimally." "A delay of just a second to download or upload content has a negative significant impact on the user experience, so the streaming services have to do everything to avoid that the content slows down or stops".

Aiming to analyze how to affect the loyalty of the user and the brand image, the study was supplemented with a questionnaire to respondents filled out before and after developing tasks.
