SenseVirtual targets Africas virtual reality solutions --

Experience the cutting edge of virtual reality technology this Thursday at the Online and eLearning Conference in Johannesburg hosted by SenseVirtual.

SenseVirtual provides high-end virtual reality experiences which they strongly believe will have a positive impact in Africa s market.

SenseVirtual is already working on Africas first Virtual Reality Hackathon to be hosted in South Africa. The hackathon initiative is about creating value in the education & training industries and will be working with a number of companies.

Here are some great VR inventions from around the world that SenseVirtual has documented:

At this years Cannes Film Festival, Alejandro Gonz lez I rritu presented a virtual reality cinematic masterpiece titled Carne y Arena. Carne y Arena is a tale about how many Latin American immigrants suffer a long and painful journey in the Arizona desert in order to get to America. In some instances the immigrants are spotted and caught by the U.S. authorities and sent back to their home country.

In creating this film, I rritu located real people who suffered the same fate and had them re-enact the events on camera which were then converted to VRs 360-degree sweep creating an in-your-face urgency for the viewer.

The film has become the first virtual reality project to be officially selected by the Cannes Film Festival with viewers describing it as a landmark of VR experience.

Another filmmaker and ocean-enthusiast, David Attenborough created a VR on the Great Barrier Reef. Attenborough takes viewers down into the ocean to experience the underwater world of coral, colourful fish and dangerous reef sharks.

The VR has won an award for Digital Creativity at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards and Attenborough is already working on another VR project titled, Hold The World.

I have enjoyed helping people to discover more about the natural world, and Hold The World offers people a unique opportunity: to examine rare objects, some millions of years old, up close. It represents an extraordinary new step in how people can explore and experience nature, all from the comfort of their own homes, said Attenborough.

The VR world has also seen a major exhibition at the Yorkshire Museum, staged in partnership with the British Museum. In this event the power of VR is used to bring viewers into the world of the Vikings. Visitors wear virtual reality helmets and are transported back to the camp where Vikings camped out in their thousands during the winter of AD 872-3 while they prepared for conquest.

In another VR showcase, the virtual reality theory was tested on drinkers when Guinness decided to take the R/GA studios campaign to another level. Drinkers were transported into a world of colours, shapes and sound which Guinness claims is scientifically proven to enhance flavours.

Alex Wills, managing director of R/GA Studios, said: VR technology is increasingly becoming a viable new media platform for brands and agencies that are looking for powerful ways to impact on branded storytelling. We re really excited to have partnered with Guinness on a campaign that uses VR not as a gimmick or a first , but for what the technology was actually designed to do: suspend the senses and transport you to another place.

A Children s Hospital Los Angeles is using virtual reality for emergency paediatric trauma situation training. While at the Royal London Hospital in the United Kingdom, medical professors have also decided to give their medical training a more intimate experience using the virtual reality platform.

Through the power of VR, the hospital is able to train surgeons around the world as if they are in the same room. VR allows a unique immersive learning experience that puts the student directly next to world class surgeons. We felt that traditional methods of teaching needed disrupting and the rapid advances in augmented and virtual reality allowed a different way of transferring knowledge and skills, commented Dr. Shafi Ahmed from the hospital.

The Online and eLearning conference will have Tyrone Rubin from SenseVirtual present a talk titled The power of Virtual Reality in learning: creating engaging, entertaining and highly realistic experiences.
