Enigma Von Hamburg, Director of Miss Drag South Africa, says the event has provided a platform where change agents are cultivated to engage in transformational work that is community orientated and community-specific.

Von Hamburg adds that Miss Drag South Africa has moved beyond the conventional notions of beauty pageants to becoming an agency that challenges and dismantles those notions.

The event is open to any person assigned male at birth and who identifies either as non-binary, gay and/or transgender and who is a lover of the art of drag.

We are aware that drag is not a gender identity but a form of expression that has later become an impetus for queer liberation, explains Von Hamburg.

Have you got what it takes to wear the crown? Von Hamburg says that the ideal Miss Drag South Africa contestant is a member of the queer community who is passionate about social change and able to advocate for inclusion and solidarity with the aim of creating an affirming, open, just and enabling society.

The 2023 edition will see the crowning of the fifth Miss Drag South Africa.

The debut event, in 2017, was hosted in Stellenbosch and saw educator, Zilin Ayoki crowned as the queen.

Thereafter, the windy city of Gqeberha hosted the second edition where Vinny Vicky, a local entrepreneur, took the crown.

In 2019, Tshwane hosted the pageant where Belinda Qaqamba Ka-Fassie, a masters student in education, was crowned.

In 2021, adapting to the constraints of the Covid-19 lockdown, the pageant took the form of a hybrid edition during which Miz Cambell was declared the winner.

Cambell, a Johannesburg designer and robotics expert who is still the reigning queen, will pass on her crown at this year's ceremony which will take place in the mother city, Cape Town.

How to enter Miss Drag South Africa 2023 Entries are open until 15 February 2023. If you have your sights set on the crown, email missdragsouthafrica@evhempire.co.za or send a WhatsApp message to 078 515 9645 for an entry form.

As customary, the finalists will be invited to a glam camp where they will participate in several activities and training, ranging from public speaking, queen etiquette, media advocacy and gender sensitisation.

Von Hamburg has also invited potential sponsors to support the organisation.
