Sharjah Ruler receives honourary PhD from University...

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, emphasised that the history of co-operation between Sharjah and Kerala dates back to centuries and that areas of this co-operation has grown significantly strongly over the past six decades.

His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah added that such co-operation has resulted in mutual contributions between stakeholders, professionals and traders in both the Emirate of Sharjah and the State of Kerala, especially the industry and services sectors which could benefit from the competitive advantages concerning mutual resources between both countries.

This came in a speech His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah delivered on Tuesday, at the Government House in Kerala State, on being awarded the honourary PhD in the field of Cultural Relations and Education, in the presence of the Governor of Kerala, Justys B. Sadasiyum and Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala.

Commending societal role of University of Calicut

In his speech, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah expressed happiness over the special ceremony which saw the presence of elite of guests, high-ranking officials from the government of Kerala and the University of Calicut.

We are honoured to receive the honourary PhD from the University of Calicut, and we extend our deep thanks and gratitude to the nomination committee and the university's high administration for their decision, His Highness said.

His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah highlighted the great, gradual and constant influence of the University of Calicut on the communities of Kerala, resembling such influence to the educational institutions in Sharjah have on the community in the emirate which firmly stems from our belief that good education is the best long term investment, and that its innovative outputs are basic components towards achieving our societies' economic, social, cultural and developmental objectives. He congratulated the University of Calicut's staff for their untiring efforts on the path of excellence wishing them more and incessant success in all their endeavours.

Pardon of 149 Indians convicted in financial cases

His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah announced, before the audience, his decision to pardon 149 Indians convicted in financial cases, misdemeanors and minor offenses in general and those in the penal and correctional institutions in the Emirate of Sharjah, whose liabilities amount to AED 20 million.

His Highness concluded: We are very grateful to you for the warmth reception and hospitality. We extend our sincere thanks to all and our best wishes to the University of Calicut and to the Government and people of Kerala.

Following the announcement of the start of the ceremony to award His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah the honourary PhD, Kerala's Minister of Education read the decision of the University of Calicut's Board to present His Highness with the honourary PhD in recognition of His Highness' outstanding role and unremitting support for science and scientific research, in addition to his great efforts in serving Arab and Islamic culture, and in appreciation of his intellectual historical and literary production, which has been translated into several world languages and enriched many libraries around the world.

Then, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah received the honourary PhD from Governor of Kerala, Justys B. Sadasiyum, before His Highness wrote a word of thanks in the University of Calicut honourary PhD commemorative book.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Vijayan delivered a speech in which he praised Sheikh Sultan's efforts to strengthen the mutual co-operation ties between Sharjah and Kerala while highlighting his academic and cultural achievements and underlining the importance of granting the honourary PhD to a truly deserving person.

Upon his request, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah met, before the ceremony, with Vijayan at his official residence, where they exchanged friendly conversation and discussed several issues of mutual concern, to serve the development of co-operation ties between their two countries.

The ceremony also saw the presence of Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Media Council; Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Rulers Office; Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Director of Government Relations Department; Dr. Ahmed Abdulrahman Al Banna, UAE Ambassador to India; Abdullah Al Owais, Chairman of Sharjah Department of Culture and Information; Ahmed Mohammed Al Midfa, honourary Chairman of the Indian Association Sharjah; Mohammed Obaid Al Zaabi, Director of the Sharjah Department of Protocol and Guesthouses; Jamal Hussein Al Zaabi, UAE Consul-General in Kerala; Navdeep Suri, Indian Ambassador to the UAE; and Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of Sharjah Media Corporation, several ministers and officials from the Government of Kerala, as well as local diplomats, academics and businessmen, and a number of diplomats, academics and businessmen.
