Four Corners soundtrack available for download

Director Ian Gabriel's acclaimed, hard-hitting drama Four Corners opens in cinemas on 28 March. The coming-of-age thriller explores the harsh realities of the unique and volatile gangland sub-culture of the sprawling Cape Flats, and has inspired a new single, Aweh Four Corners produced by J-Beatz and Four Corners composer Markus Wormstorm, who is a well-known and prolific local electronic music producer.

The single has been created especially for the soundtrack of the film, and features three exciting young South African artists: Youngsta, Kanyi and E-Jy. It's currently getting airplay on national radio stations.

Aweh Four Corners is sung in English, Kaapse Afrikaans and Xhosa and picks up on the poignant undertones of hope and survival that forms part of the lives of young people living in the modern, gritty reality of marginalised South Africa.

The movie is already making waves on the streets, and we expect that the single is sure to follow suit, says director Gabriel.

Commenting on the single, music journalist Evan Milton (Rolling Stone SA, Suitcase UK, Argus Good Weekend), says Wormstorm has once again helped to reinvent South African electronics with the release of the song, which features Cape Flats hip hop. But he hasn't just scalped the symbols and patois of the Western Capes proudly indigenous ghetto style and used that as a vehicle for his own tunes, says Milton.

A fusion of beats

Instead, he's collaborated with rhymers and producers and added his own inimitable hints of dark compressed danger to the music. Look from one corner, and this is dubstep ripped from its European origins and slapped into a vibrant Mzansi form. Look from another corner, and this is the next inevitable evolution of Kasi and Flats music-making. The best part? We've got South African musicians using the fact that the country is making better and better movies, to make better and better beats. Aweh, like it says.

The single will be exclusively available to download from Deezer.com for one week after which it will also be available from mainstream digital outlets including iTunes.

Wormstorm also composed the film score for Four Corners. Wormstorm's original score, unconventional arrangements and eclectic inspirations evoke the evolving and often unpredictable emotional states of the characters in the film as they navigate the Four Corners, says Gabriel.

The film accesses a soundscape of original South African music by talents as diverse as Khuli Chana, Kanyi, Rattex, Jits Vinger, Cream, Kyle Shepherd, Felix laBand, Isaac Mutant and others, whose signature beats give a dynamic and uniquely South African pulse to this homegrown film.

This soundtrack includes Wormstorm's layered and enigmatic cinematic soundscape scored for the film as well as bonus tracks inspired by the film.

Commenting in The Hollywood Reporter, journalist Jordan Mintzer wrote: The soundtrack by Cape Town electro musician Markus Wormstorm mixes classical compositions with catchy hip-hop beats, underscoring a street life that's as culturally rich.

The motion picture soundtrack releases officially on 13 March 2014, and will be available exclusively through http://www.Deezer.com for one week after which it will be available from digital outlets.
