Royal Visit to Jena: ZEI presented itself to the Dutch royal couple and a busine delegation

JENA/Germany, 08.02.2017. As part of their working visit to the German federal states of Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, the Dutch royal couple also made their way to Jena on 8 February. The goal of the trip undertaken by King Willem-Alexander and Queen M xima was to further strengthen the extensive ties between the Netherlands and the respective German states.

Jena presented itself as a high-tech site for optics and and photonics. In the lobby of the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, four Thuringian and four Dutch institutions showed leading-edge products from optical research and industry. At a joint booth, ZEISS and ASML presented results from their many years of successful collaboration. On show were the ZEISS Starlith 19xyi lithography optics that are integrated into wafer scanners by the Dutch company enabling resolutions of below 40 nanometers, and high-performance lens elements for these optics that are produced in Jena. The ZEISS AxioZoom microscope from Jena showed an exposed wafer with the subsequent chips.

Dr. Ludwin Monz, Member of the ZEISS Executive Board, Dr. Andreas Dorsel, Member of the Management Board of the Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology (SMT) business group and Dr. Markus Matthes, Executive Vice President Design and Engineering at ASML, demonstrated the exhibits to the royal couple, the ambassador and the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade.

Business delegation in Jena

Parallel to this visit, a Dutch business delegation was traveling through the three German states. Within this framework, various lectures and business matching focused on the optics and semiconductor industries took place on the Beutenberg Campus in Jena. Dorsel presented the company ZEISS at the morning pitch session. Representatives from the delegation visited ZEISS in Jena on Thursday. Their plant tour led them to SMT and to the Medical Technology (MED) business group.

Partnership between ZEISS and ASML

In 1992 ZEISS and ASML entered into a strategic partnership to enable customers all over the world to manufacture increasingly powerful and efficient microchips. With its lithography optics, ZEISS produces the core component for ASMLs chip exposure systems. This technology is setting the pace of progress in global digitalization. A large proportion of the electronic devices currently used all over the world are based on chips produced with ASML systems.

In November 2016 ZEISS and ASML raised their partnership to a new level: The companies announced, that they have agreed on a 24.9% minority stake of ASML in ZEISS's subsidiary Carl Zeiss SMT, in order to accelerate the joint development of the next generation of optical systems for chip exposure using extreme ultraviolet light (EUV).
