The Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival has announced a focus on women in an expanded lineup of ocean-conscious events in 2017.
Wavescape will showcase the talents of scientists, artists, photographers and activists who add a feminine voice to a growing chorus by some South Africa s most talented creative and scientific minds who use the ocean as their muse to advocate change.
Wavescape premieres the all-women surf film Blue Road, as well as Light Waves, a photographic exhibition of women in surfing by renowned photographer Saskia Koerner.
A strong female presence can be found in the bumper lineup of core favourites: Artboard Project, Clifton Beach Screening, Slide Night, Film Festival and Blue Ocean Master Class, while the iconic poster depicts a twist of the mermaid motif with a woman surfer morphing into a tentacled sea monster below the surface.
Several exciting new events have been added to the programme. Wavescape has partnered with the V&A Waterfront s Ocean Life Festival to screen some of the best current ocean conservation films. The Ocean Film Festival curated by Wavescape will screen the films Smog of the Sea, Blue, Chasing Coral and A Plastic Ocean at Ster Kinekor Cinema Nouveau between 29 November and 1 December 2017.
Wavescape also hosts a film night at Rolling Wood Surf & Skate Store, a Beach Coop Beach Cleanup, Jack Black Movie night, Mami Wata s Night of African Adventure, and the Beach Reach educational day for children hosted by the Save our Seas Foundation.
Taking place in Cape Town from 20 November to 10 December 2017, Wavescape was born of a love for surfing. Now in its 14th year, the festival began as a way to capture the stoke and exhilaration of surfing through stories of exotic destinations and secret waves but has morphed beyond surf culture to the fight for a greener earth and bluer oceans.
Festival director Shani Judes said: Each year our festival showcases amazing people, their acts of kindness, talents and genuine love for the ocean. This year we are particularly chuffed to have so many more women taking centre stage and dominating our line-up. Pollution and global warming affects us all and we are all able to help effect that change.
Supporting partners are Marine Stewardship Council, Jack Black Beer, Wesgro Film and Media Promotion, Save Our Seas Foundation, Petco, Long Beach Capital, Mami Wata, Deus ex Machina, Channel 24 and Wavescape.co.za
