Blazing 1Gbps 4G speeds in Finnish village

For the trial, DNA deployed the Ericsson LTE Carrier Aggregation capability, which utilizes bandwidth from co-located carriers and bands to increase the effective LTE bandwidth and consequently, the throughput for subscribers. Three 20MHz carrier waves in the 1800MHz, 2100MHz and 2600MHz frequency bands were combined using new radio network technologies such as 4x4 MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), and higher order modulation (256-QAM).

A year ago, DNA announced a theoretical mobile broadband speed of 600Mbps, and devices supporting those speeds are entering the market. The operator expects devices capable of reaching the new 1Gbps speed to become more common later this year, and will increase the speed of its network as these devices appear on the market.

The piloted maximum speed is just the tip of the iceberg, says Jarkko Laari, Director, Radio Networks, DNA. This year we will update and significantly expand the 4G network capacity and use the Ericsson LTE Carrier Aggregation technology, for example in the 2100MHz frequency band, in different parts of Finland.

What does it mean, then, to have access to a mobile broadband network with 1Gbps speeds? A lot, especially in a scarcely populated country like Finland.

High-speed mobile broadband is vital for introducing the benefits of digitalization to all Finns, says Olli Sirkka, Head of Ericsson in Finland. The speed tests we have conducted together with DNA speak of the evolution of the 4G network toward 5G and of Giga-level connectivity in remote parts of the country.

According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, global mobile data traffic will increase to eight times its current level by 2022. Much of the growth will be in video, which will make up 75 percent of the traffic by 2022, compared with 50 percent today.

While LTE uptake is driven by demand for improved user experience and faster networks, 5G will provide wireless connectivity for a wide range of new applications and use cases, such as smart homes, intelligent transport systems, and industrial manufacturing. In addition to such Internet of Things connections, more than half a billion 5G subscriptions are expected to be activated by 2022.

And Karuby, Finland will be a good place to experience it.
