Freedom Month 2019: What you need to know

The month is celebrated throughout South Africa to celebrate the dawn of freedom and democracy and the achievements of all South Africans. According to the Government Gazette:

April will forever resonate in the history of our nation as the month that saw the first democratic elections in 1994 that gave birth to freedom and constitutional democracy in South Africa. This election marked a turning point that saw the previously disadvantaged become part of the South African political processes. The country belongs to all who live in it.

What Freedom Month is about It's a time to look back at South Africa's roots. A time to remember the bitter history, but also to celebrate how far we've come as a nation to ensure a better future for everyone.

It is also the perfect time to familiarise ourselves with South Africa's Constitution and re-examine the challenges and gains made thus far in transforming South Africa to be socially inclusive to all its citizens.

Even though we have one of the most progressive constitutions in the world, we still witness racial hatred from those who are opposed to the social democratic project and nation-building agenda, according to Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa.

Things to do during Freedom Month: If you are stuck for ideas of what to do during the month of April, plan a trip to any of these:

Visit Sharpeville Human Rights Memorial

Plan a trip to the Apartheid Museum

Visit Soweto

Take a trip to Robben Island

Visit the Nelson Mandela Capture site

In addition, South Africans also celebrate the freedom we have today, thanks to Winnie Madikizela Mandela's contribution. She fought for the liberation of South Africa to the bitter end.
