Technicolor Provides Color Finishing For Period Drama Free State Of Jones

Written and directed by Oscar-nominated Gary Ross (Seabiscuit), Free State of Jones stars Matthew McConaughey as Newton Knight and tells the story of Knight as he and a band of freedom fighters instigate an armed rebellion against slavery in Mississippi during the American Civil War.

Technicolor London's Supervising Colorist Peter Doyle was pulled into the project in the early stages by renowned Director of Photography, Beno t Delhomme AFC (The Theory of Everything). Working closely with Delhomme and agreeing upon the color palate, Peter Doyle commented that he was, instantly awestruck by the story. Reading the script meant I could envision the style that Beno t Delhomme and Gary Ross had intended.

Delhomme shot the film with the Arri Alexa XT, with Panavision Primo lenses; Aspect ratio 1.85:1. Drawing on the latest trend for natural lighting, Peter Doyle explained that Beno t Delhomme's lens choice fit this lighting decision, Through clever use of the Alexa and vintage lenses, Beno t Delhomme has achieved a filmic look that fits both the subject matter and creative style of the film.

The final color finish was undertaken at Technicolor PostWorks New York with the objective to enhance the period feel and the hyper-realistic quality. Peter Doyle reflected that, The performances are so strong that a key aspect of my role was to ensure that the color enhanced, not overpowered the subtlety of the script and performances. It may seem an oxymoron to describe the film as both strong and fragile, but in my opinion, this tricky balance has been achieved by Beno t Delhomme and Gary Ross, their crew and, of course, the actors. Therefore, it was very clear to me that the DI needed to enhance this aesthetic and not overpower it.
