SVG Cloud & Content Workflows Summit Focuses on Live Production, Content Management, AI

Leagues, broadcasters, and technologists gather to tackle cloud economics, distributed production, AI-driven media management, growing pressure to monetize the archive

The cloud and AI are driving a dramatic transformation of the sports-production landscape, and SVG's inaugural Cloud & Content Workflows Summit brought the industry together in New York City on Tuesday to address how to navigate the shift.

As virtualized hardware, cloud-based workflows, and AI-powered tools become more commonplace, the entire sports-production supply chain is being reimagined from the ground up. Leagues, broadcasters, streamers, and technology partners gathered at 230 Fifth for the Summit, which combined SVG's previous Cloud Production and Content Management events into a single day of comprehensive programming.

Tales From the Trenches, PCR in the Cloud, the Economics

NBC Sports Manager, Solutions Architecture, Khaldoon Almandalawi; MLB VP, Broadcasting, Technical Production, and Special Events, Jason Hedgcock; NHL SVP, Technology, Grant Nodine; and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) Senior Director, Media and Technical Operations, Steve Pellegrino recounted their organizations' experiences with live game production, playout, media management, archive workflows, and automated highlights. The through-line: cloud has moved from buzzword to backbone, but the path has been uneven, and the lessons worth sharing are often the ones learned the hard way.

FloSports Director, Global Stream Operations, Dennis LeMire and Spalk Chief Commercial Officer Tom Read detailed the tools and workflows behind an operation that streams more than 55,000 events a year. Among the hardest problems at that volume: putting professional-grade commentary on every event regardless of where the talent sits. The session was sponsored by Spalk.

Industry consultant Pete Emminger moderated The Control Room Without Walls: Replicating the PCR in the Cloud discussion on how far the cloud-based production-control room has come - and how far it still has to go. AWS Senior Manager, Solutions Architecture, Thomas Edwards; BitFire Director, Client Services, Ben Hayes; and Alpha Manager, Cloud Solutions, Luke Potter compared approaches ranging from lean, stripped-down builds to full PCR replication with every bell and whistle, addressing which pieces of the ecosystem are ready for primetime and which are not.

During The Economics of Cloud Production: Navigating Costs, Licenses, and Services panel, AWS Worldwide Partner Solutions Architect, M&E, Noor Hassan; NEP Group SVP, Technology and Capital Planning, Scott Rothenberg; and Deloitte Principal, Sports Media Solutions, Art Wong explored compute and egress costs, SaaS and licensing models, managed services versus DIY builds, and how to budget for live-event spikes. With vendor dependencies deepening and subscriptions multiplying, the panel weighed how sports-media organizations can build more-sustainable cloud economics without giving up performance.

Live Production: Lower-Tier Sports, AI Tools, REMI, the Next Frontier

The afternoon split into two tracks focused on, respectively, live production in the cloud and content management.

Rising Tides: How the Public Cloud Can Transform Tier 2 and 3 Sports Production offered a look at how the public cloud is reshaping the economics of niche, college, youth, and emerging properties. tx.video COO Hayden Harris; FloSports' LeMire; and LiveU Global Solution Sales Specialist Ben Ratner discussed how rightsholders below the top tier are using cloud production to raise broadcast quality, expand coverage, and reach audiences that were previously out of range.

Next up, AI-Driven Production and the Cloud: Driving New Efficiencies brought Spiideo Director, Media Partner Sales/Live Sports Streaming Partnerships, Scott Bushman; NBA Director, Broadcast Strategy and Technology Support, Victor Cerejo; AWS Head of Industry Business Development, Americas, Media & Entertainment, Games, and Sports, Jason Dvorkin; and TwelveLabs VP, Revenue, Bobby Mohr to the stage. Topics ranged from automated highlights and intelligent camera switching to orchestrated playout, metadata generation, content tagging, and personalized feeds.

WBD VP, Technology and Operations, Chris Brown; TAG Video Systems Director, Sales, Americas, Mark Davis; and Spalk co-founder/CEO Ben Reynolds addressed latency, connectivity, and crew coordination alongside the flexibility and efficiency gains driving adoption.

A closedtrack, The Next Frontier: Operationalizing Live Cloud Workflows at Scale, offered a forward-looking conversation on making live cloud production repeatable and reliable across full schedules.
