AfriDocs presents women s stories this August --

August on AfriDocs sees women in the spotlight with a diversity of films from Africa and beyond. Strong women are at the centre of stories that are at times inspiring, at times heart-wrenching, but always engaging and educating.

Other documentaries screened this month look at issues that affect women, the scourge of rape and how older women are learning to protect themselves (Kung Fu Grandma), the Cameroonian story of the tough-minded state prosecutor Vera Ngassa and Court President Beatrice Ntuba who fight for rights of women in a small Muslim village (Sisters-in-Law) and the biopic of Esther Phiri, the famous Zambian boxer.

Throughout the month of August make sure to watch some of the world s most engaging documentaries that shed light on the day-to-day challenges and successes of the women of the world.

Esther Phiri has literally had to fight to carve out an independent life on her own terms. In her native Zambia, the seven-time world boxing champion became an icon. In Between Rings we understand why: she is a deeply charismatic woman with the courage of her convictions. And she can knock anybody out! Esther first renounced her education to support her family. But since then she has also renounced the expectations of marriage and family to invest in her meteoric career as a boxer.

Kung Fu Grandma | Jeong-One Park | Kenya | 2012 | 27min

In the Korogocho slum in Nairobi, Kenya, widespread rape of older women is rampant. Besides other prejudices, local young men, mostly under the influence of drugs and alcohol, are convinced that sex with an older woman cures AIDS. This documentary follows a group of older women who have decided to jointly prepare for violent attacks by taking self-defence training.

Sisters in Law | Kim Longinotto, Florence Ayisi | Cameroon | 2005 | 104 min

A fascinating, moving and often hilarious look at the work of one small courthouse in Cameroon where two woman determined to change a village are making progress that could change the world. The tough-minded state prosecutor Vera Ngassa and Court President Beatrice Ntuba are working to help women in their Muslim village find the courage to fight often-difficult cases of abuse, despite pressures from their family and their community to remain silent.
