LONDON, UK (Tuesday 18 June, 2013) School's out, vacations are booked and one audience never seems to have enough entertainment: the family. Today, Netflix launched Netflix Families (www.netflix.co.uk/families), a new destination designed to meet family's summer entertainment needs. Parents will find the iconic Netflix rows filled with trusted recommendations of popular family TV shows and movies, information on the best ways to stream, and videos about how other families use Netflix. Accessible from any computer or tablet, the Families page is available for both members and non-members.
We see increases in family and kids content viewing hours during summer so we know Netflix is a great solution for entertaining families this time of year, said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix. With the Netflix Families page, we've taken our proprietary algorithm to create lists we think families will love. In the Are We There Yet' list we've picked TV shows and movies ideal for watching on your tablet while on summer holiday and the Classics to Share with your Kids' list has TV shows that parents can may have loved growing up and can reminisce and introduce to their own children.
A recent survey commissioned by Netflix, found that over 50% of parents find buying DVDs frustrating because they get damaged, scratched or simply cost too much, yet over half (52%) of those surveyed currently do not subscribe to a streaming service. Even with the majority (92%) of households with at least one steaming device, there are still so many families missing out on great easily-accessible entertainment out there! Netflix Families provides quick-start instructions for those families who are unsure about how to stream; and the unique Netflix technology provides each member with a personalized experience based on preferences and favorites.
The curated Netflix playlists in the Netflix Families interface introduce parents to alternate times and places to stream Netflix, some include: Family Movie Night, TV for Curious Kids, Are We There Yet, and even Superhero Movies for You and Your Teens. Netflix Families compliments Netflix Just For Kids, which offers thousands of titles for children aged 2 12, as well as the family in general. For one low price of £5.99, which includes the dedicated kids section organized by easy-to-understand genres such as superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs and girl power, families can access thousands of hours of TV programmes and films.
Summer is always a busy time of the year for our family. With fun days out together, family holidays, outdoor activities or coordinating outings with friends, we are constantly on the go, said TV & radio personality and mum of two, Zoe Ball. Netflix Families provides a great way for us to enjoy quality time together with our favourite movies and TV shows without breaking the bank!
While searching for ways to entertain the family during the holidays, UK parents spend an average of £178 per child during the six-week summer break. The monthly Netflix subscription offers unlimited streaming of family-friendly titles from Disney, Paramount, and Sony Pictures Entertainment. With the average family going to the cinema 4 times a year is it really worth £40 to see one movie?
Survey Methodology
The Netflix Survey was conducted by OnePoll (www.onepoll.com) among 2,000 US parents of children ages 5 to 12 via an email invitation and an online survey.
