Are you getting excited for the ARMA conference in San Diego?
In this special customer edition blog, Deborah Naas of McKesson answers a few questions about her ARMA experience.
This is a must read for any ARMA participant!
Hi Deborah, so glad to have you here! Can you tell us a little bit about your current role and how long have you been in it?
For the last 3 years, I've had the pleasure of building and implementing McKesson U.S. Pharmaceutical's Strategic Records & Information Management program, based on Global RIM initiatives. As senior RIM manager for McKesson's largest business unit, I am responsible for developing strategies to build Pharma's RIM program, building the RIM network (now 200 associates and growing), managing physical record inventory, providing business teams guidance and solutions to improve the management of physical and electronic information, and planning and conducting annual clean-up events.
As baseline for these initiatives, I designed and executed a benchmarking project to understand our most paper-intensive environments, which led to designing a nationwide remediation plan. In time, Iron Mountain was contracted to conduct this remediation. My work is refocusing to vital records management and, in collaboration with my Compliance and Ethics team members, on risk mitigation activities-hooray for front-end records management!
How long have you been coming to ARMA?
Eighteen years. (Does that make me old or just seasoned?) I joined the Silicon Valley ARMA chapter in spring 1996, where I received much learning and encouragement from my fellow members. Within a few months, I attended my first ARMA conference and became SVC's newsletter editor and a steadfast ARMA International member. Since then, I've been a member of other chapters, such as Golden Gate, Sacramento, Washington DC, and now Dallas.
What is your best memory from ARMA?
Can I give two? My first best memory was hearing Dr. Mark Langemo, CRM, FAI for the first time, as he clearly and enthusiastically laid out the science of RIM, including its foundation and benefits. Second, but equal to my first, was hearing Wendy Shade, FAI share her insights on the art of customer service. (Anyone remember the Southwest Airlines story?) With many thanks to these two ARMA fellows, I've endeavored to blend solid technical expertise with a strong customer focus as I've developed my RIM brand.
What have you learned/experienced at ARMA that has helped you in your job/career? How did you apply what you learned?
The question for me should be what haven't I learned at ARMA? ARMA has been my primary educational resource; for instance, I've learned RIM basics and benefits; how to market RIM, administer/manage a records center, and develop and update record schedules; as well as latest RIM trends and technical issues. But most importantly, I've learned there's always more to learn. I wouldn't be where I am today without the education I've received at ARMA conferences and chapter meetings and through networking with ARMA members and RIM vendors who've helped me on my RIM journey.
What are you looking forward to most about ARMA 2014?
Every year I get really excited about the educational sessions-guess I'm geeky that way. The great thing about the ARMA conference is how the educational opportunities can be tailored to your level and interest. This year I'll focus on risk mitigation and information governance. But of course, the conference wouldn't be complete without catching up with RIM friends-colleagues and vendor partners-and the evening events!
Thank you, Deborah! Iron Mountain is looking forward to seeing you in San Diego!
