Nokia has struck a three-year global partnership with Save the Children to promote the rights of children, with work to begin immediately in January 2015 starting in Myanmar.
Nokia will help Save the Children improve access to education and use technology to improve learning. A key element of the partnership includes disaster risk reduction given the major threat posed to children in Myanmar by natural disasters, with both parties already collaborating in this area in India.
Save the Children will give recommendations on how Nokia can promote childrens rights together with other actors.
The cooperation is based upon the Child Rights and Business Principles launched by the UN Global Compact, Save the Children and UNICEF in 2012. These ten principles help companies incorporate child rights into their core strategies and take greater responsibility for the realization of childrens rights. They also encourage companies to take children into account when creating Corporate Social Responsibility programs.
Companies are encouraged to defend child rights and commit themselves to the Child Rights and Business Principles, and to review their business practices accordingly. We are excited by the partnership and also by how technological solutions can benefit learning outcomes in Myanmar, Save the Children Finlands General Secretary Hanna Markkula-Kivisilta said.
By bringing broadband connections and navigation with mapping technologies to remote or poor areas we can bring, in addition to connectivity, sustainable improvement to peoples lives. By working together with Save the Children we hope to unleash the human possibilities of technology and create new opportunities for children, said Sakari Kotola, Head of Operations and Responsibility for Nokia.
