SVG's annual TranSPORT conference returned to New York City on Tuesday, drawing a packed house of more than 300 sports-broadcast engineers, operations leaders, and technology partners for a full day of sessions focused on the rapidly evolving world of live-sports transmission.
SVG's annual TranSPORT conference was hosted on Tuesday in New York City.
The event explored the latest innovations in IP and cloud-based transport, 5G and bonded-cellular connectivity, compression standards and protocols, REMI workflows, and more, offering a comprehensive look at how sports networks are rethinking contribution and distribution in 2025 and beyond.
After opening remarks, the day kicked off with a lively discussion titled The Current - and Future - State of Live Transmission: IP, Satellite, and Hybrid Workflows. featuring FOX Sports' Brad Cheney, Paramount/CBS's Ken Fuller, Warner Bros. Discovery's Julie Morrison, Sinclair Broadcasting Group's Paul Spinelli , and ESPN's Adam Whitlock. The group explored how IP continues to reshape contribution infrastructure, the enduring value of satellite, and the rise of hybrid workflows that blend both technologies to achieve scale, reliability, and cost efficiency.
TranSPORT opened with a panel discussion featuring featuring Brad Cheney (Fox Sports), Ken Fuller (Paramount/CBS), Julie Morrison (Warner Bros. Discovery), Paul Spinelli (Sinclair Broadcasting Group), and Adam Whitlock (ESPN).
Next, Eutelsat's G. Jim Carroccia and Genaro Grajeda detailed how the company's GEO fleet and Eutelsat OneWeb LEO network are being combined to deliver high-capacity, low-latency satellite solutions for the media industry. The following session - Spectrum Wars: The FCC Strikes Back - saw Fox Sports' Brad Cheney return to the stage to update attendees on the newly formed North American Spectrum Alliance, which is uniting broadcasters, rightsholders, and venues to protect the spectrum critical to wireless production operations.

Following a networking break, ESPN's Adam Whitlock presented JPEG-XS Spotlight: How ESPN's Contribution Scheme Continues To Evolve, highlighting how the network has embraced the format across thousands of events to minimize latency and maximize efficiency. Cheney then returned for Navigating Today's Compression Formats, breaking down the strengths and trade-offs of codecs such as HEVC, JPEG-XS, J2K, and MPEG-4 - and how each fits into live workflows based on bandwidth, latency, and image quality considerations.
The morning concluded with SRT in Action: Redefining Secure, Low-Latency Delivery for Live Content. The panel featured Haivision's Ghislain Collette, Skyline Communications' Thomas Gunkel, Open Broadcast Systems' Kieran Kunhya, Game Creek Video's James Piccirillo, and Appear's Andy Rayner. Panelists discussed how the Secure Reliable Transport protocol is being deployed across remote productions and global backhaul operations to ensure high-quality delivery over variable networks.
After lunch, the afternoon program opened with The Cloud Contribution Chain: From Stadium to Control Room. Moderator Paul Spinelli (Sinclair Broadcasting Group) was joined by the NHL's Andre Carrington, TVU Networks' Michael Cronk, Matrox Video's Francesco Scartozzi, and Verizon Business Group's Tim Stevens for a look at how cloud technologies are creating more flexible, scalable contribution models from capture to control room.

The talk welcomed ATEME's Amilcar Padilla, LiveU's Daniel Pisarski, and intoPIX's Ben Runyan to discuss strategies for balancing image fidelity and network limitations as more live events move to next-generation formats.
The day's final stretch spotlighted two topics central to the live-production ecosystem. At-Home Production: How Transmission Protocols Enable the REMI Revolution, brought together TAG Video Systems' Mark Davis, Tata Communications' Jeremy Dujardin, Net Insight's Adam Nilsson, and ESPN's Adam Whitlock for an in-depth conversation on how evolving transport standards are empowering remote and distributed production at scale.
ESPN's Adam Whitlock, who serves as the chair of the SVG TranSPORT Committee, offered a look at the network's commitment to JPEG XS.
Closing the program, Redundancy and Reliability: Best Practices in Mission-Critical Broadcasts of Major Events emphasized the importance of failsafe systems and multi-path design in global sports coverage. Moderator Adam Whitlock led a panel featuring T-Mobile for Business' Ryan Bowman, Media Linkss' John Dale, PSSI Global Services' Jason Land, and Lumen Technologies' Eric Miller, who detailed how their teams maintain uptime and signal integrity when the stakes are highest.
