Amplifying global youth voices on climate, tvebiomovies 2019 takes part in the UN Climate Summit Lucy/ September 20, 2019/ news
With huge youth climate protests taking place worldwide today, tve is helping to amplify the global youth voice on climate action by showcasing this year's tvebiomovies video competition at the UN Climate Summit in New York. Three videos by environmental activists from Brazil, Portugal and US have been selected as the winners of the fifth Global Youth Video Competition, part of tvebiomovies 2019.
The winning films and a powerful promo reel featuring stories and clips from many of the entries will be premiered at two key events, as part of the activities around the UN Secretary General's Climate Summit this week in New York:
SDG Media Zone, 21 September, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York at 12:00 midday local time.
Building a Resilient Future, 22 September, at the New School, New York from 8:30 a.m. local time.
Watch the competition promo reel here and find out more about the winning films and competition online at: www.biomovies.tve.org.
The winners, chosen through online public voting, are: Callie Broaddus from the US for the Balancing use of Land for People and Ecosystems' category; Raquel Barata Gai o Cunha Silva from Portugal for the Cities and Local Action to Combat Climate Change' category; and Rafael Forsetto and Kiane Assis from Brazil for the Nature-Based Solutions for Food and Human Health' category.
The winning film-makers will travel to the UN Climate Conference (COP 25) in Chile in December and will work with the UN Climate Change secretariat's communications team in covering highlights of the meeting.
tve's manager of digital projects, Nick Turner, who will be at the Climate Summit to present the competition, said, Through the competition we're able to tap into the incredible range of actions happening at the local level all over the world to address the climate, nature and food emergency. It shows there's a huge demand for change and young people are taking on that leadership role.'
404 young people between the ages of 18 and 30, from 104 different countries, entered videos into three categories. The competition extended its reach in 2019, with entries for the first time from Antigua, Barbados, Finland, Jordan, Madagascar, Montserrat, Netherlands, Niger, Paraguay and Samoa.
The competition is run by tve through its innovative tvebiomovies global youth video outreach project, and is backed by the three UN agencies set up following the 1992 Rio Earth Summit: UN Climate Change, UN Convention to Combat Desertification, and the Convention on Biological Diversity, with additional support from the Global Environment Facility's Small Grants Programme, which is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, and further support from the BNP Paribas Foundation.
