Upfronts 04: Fox Adds Five New Shows to Fall Lineup

Fox revealed its fall lineup Monday, with five new shows joining a crop of two returning freshman hits and a veteran core as the net continues a turnaround effort.

Fall debuts include comic book origin story Gotham on Monday, reality import Utopia on Tuesday; Steven Spielberg hospital drama Red Band Society on Wednesday; Broadchurch remake Gracepoint on Thursday; and live-action comedy Mulaney joining the traditional comedy block Sunday, which now will also include Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

New entries Backstrom, Bordertown, Empire, Hieroglyph, The Last Man on Earth, Weird Loners and event series Wayward Pines are on tap for midseason/summer 2015. Fox also plans more live specials in the coming season, among them the Evel Knievel-inspired Jump of the Century, Grease Live, and a new New Years celebration in Miami hosted by Pitbull.

The 2013-14 season has been something of a mixed bag for Fox, with successes including Sleepy Hollow and Brooklyn Nine-Nine but numerous misfires including Dads and Rake.

Kevin Reilly, entertainment chairman for Fox Broadcasting Co., made perhaps the biggest news of the season by proclaiming at numerous intervals his plan to abandon the traditional pilot season. In announcing the fall lineup Monday, he reiterated another recent theme, stating that the lineup reflects the biggest investment in programming weve ever made.

Reilly was set to address reporters in a conference call Monday morning ahead of the networks afternoon upfront presentation at the Beacon Theatre. More analysis to follow that call.
