Viewers of the popular Afrikaans soapie Suidooster have been left reeling after one of the main characters died during a heartbreaking scene aired on Wednesday night.

Cedwyn Joel - playing the role Abdullah Samsodien aka Uncle AB - was one of the original cast members when Suidooster first hit South African television screens back in November 2015.

Since then, Uncle AB has become a regular on-screen visitors and a household name in many South African homes.

But on Wednesday, he waved the soapie and its viewers goodbye for good, when he passed away due to a gunshot wound inflicted by a hitman at his daughter's wedding ceremony.

Joel, who is a well-established and well-accomplished actor, leaves Suidooster after seven and a half years in the role of everyone's beloved Uncle AB .

HEARTBROKEN VIEWERS EXPRESS THEIR SHOCK Fans of KykNet's popular television show which plays off in Cape Town, took to social media to vent their anger and share their pain at the plot twist.

What a bloody plot twist I am genuinely sad now, one wrote on Twitter.

Another said: I didn't expect AB to leave us like that.

So AB is really gone, you guys?! That's sad, a third user said.

Others took a more light-hearted approach to the storyline.

Morning people. Have you informed your boss yet that you won't be able to come in today because you're going to attend AB's janazah? #Suidooster , someone wrote on Twitter.

Ai, I think all the Suidooster viewers are heartbroken this evening.

According to an official statement released by Suidooster's publicity manager, Wilmer M ller, production had to keep Joel's exit from the show a secret after he filmed his last scenes on 28 February. She added that Joel's contribution to the soapie is of incredible value.

Although it was a difficult decision for Cedwyn (69) to leave Suidooster, it was one he made to be able to tackle other projects and to spend more time with his family, reads the statement.

We were very privileged when Cedwyn agreed to be one of the main characters in Suidooster. At that time, he was already one of South Africa's most respected actors.

The past eight years, his character not only became a great drawing card for the soapie, but the name AB Samsodien became a household name. The entire team, in front of and behind the scenes, has learned a lot from Cedwyn. His friendliness and humbleness combined with his professional attitude are enviable qualities.
