Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela has confirmed that Tshedza Pictures' telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire has been canned, seven months later.

GQEBERHA: THE EMPIRE' CANNED This comes a day after Zimoja reported on Tuesday, 18 July that the isiXhosa telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire, which is shot in the Eastern Cape may be coming to an end.

Mphela tweeted: Gqeberha The Empire canned. The Mzansi Magic telenovela based in the Eastern Cape will not be renewed for another season when its current one ends. While the show started off lukewarm, its ratings were actually improving, pulling around 650k viewers per peak episode.

Zimoja added that publication the telenovela which premiered in January 2023 has been followed by controversy from the beginning and that actors allegedly complained about the ill-treatment and terrible salaries they've receive from the production company.

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela also revealed in October 2022 that the show was rumoured to be embroiled in financial drama.

Actors pay delayed. Sources inform me the show is budgeted at R86-million, and partly funded by Eastern Cape government. The show, produced by Tshedza Pictures is shot on location in Qhebhera, Eastern Cape. Several sources have confirmed that the production has been marred by issues, added Mphela.

SOUTH AFRICANS REACT TO TELENOVELA ENDING @ncokazbe: I hope Nozuko, Thulani etc get roles elsewhere as soon as possible, they have a great potential and a great future in the industry as well.

@SA_Ngubane: The cast being fully Xhosa is not giving shame, the accent from some of the characters is also overwhelming shame.

@TeeJayMthembu: It started off on a very bad note with below par storylines n horrible acting. After that it never really picked up until Zolani went down there to try n revive it, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, that light expires at the end of the first and only season.

@ThaboMasondo1: It had really great lineup of actors but this multichoice strategy monopolizing was bound to ruin things. The Tshedza guys are involved in way too many projects and that will surely affect the quality of their stories. Creativity is bound to dry up.
