ARRI Previews New ARRIRAW Converter (ARC) . at NAB

ARRI is currently working on a new version of ARRIRAW Converter that will be optimized for the new Mac Pro and updated to support the latest features in OS X Mavericks. ARC 3.1 will be previewed at NAB.

ARRIRAW is an uncompressed, unencrypted and uncompromised file format popular for feature films and commercials. The ARRIRAW Converter (ARC) is available as a standalone app. It is designed as a reference tool to show the most advanced image processing for ALEXA ARRIRAW files.

ARC 3.1

A key feature of ARC 3.1 will be an improved debayer algorithm called ADA-5 (ARRI Debayer Algorithm). Due to the enormous render power of the new Mac Pro and its dual GPUs, ARC 3.1 achieves better-than-real-time processing, even with data-heavy material such as maximum-resolution ALEXA XT Open Gate ARRIRAW images, and even when up-rezzing to 4K or UHD-1.

ADA-5 reduces aliasing still further than the already excellent ADA-4, for a smoother image and cleaner high contrast edges. It also exhibits less noise, especially in the blue channel, which is critical for bluescreen compositing work.

COMMAND LINE TOOL

The improved ADA-5 debayering algorithm will also be implemented in the next version of ARRI's ARC command line tool (CMD) for integration into postproduction pipelines. The CMD has been installed at high-end post and visual effects facilities around the world, and is available from the ARRI website for Mac OS X and other operating systems.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPER TOOLKIT

The ARRIRAW SDK is a Software Developer Toolkit containing the same imaging science as the ARC and CMD. This SDK is used in several postproduction tools created by members of the ARRI Partner Program, and future SDK versions (for all platforms) will also include the new debayer method in ADA-5.
