Broadcast sports uses far more MADI than it does MIDI, but the latter, a foundational control protocol for other audio and music production, is finding its way into broadcast and sports-venue applications as a triggering format for live sound effects, among other secondary uses. Next month, as MIDI strives for continued relevance in the face of new communications and control protocols over networks coming to market, The MIDI Association (TMA) will launching its second-annual May Is MIDI Month campaign.

The initiative seeks to raise $22,000, which will be used to improve member services and develop interactive content to explain new MIDI specifications, such as the next iteration of the protocol, MIDI 2.0.

Association members are being asked to donate directly to the May Is MIDI Month goal of $2,000 in individual donations at https://www.midi.org/fundraising. Matching donations from sponsors will multiply that to $22,000.

Platinum-level sponsors Ableton, IK Multimedia, Native Instruments, Roland, ROLI, Sweetwater, and Yamaha have committed to matching up to $2,000 in individual TMA member donations in May. Gold-tier sponsors - including Analog Devices, Art & Logic, Bome, Moog Music, Melodics, and Keith McMillan Instruments - have committed to matching up to $1,000.

The MIDI.org website is the definitive source for MIDI instructional materials: tutorials. videos, and specifications, including collaboration between TMA and its Japanese counterpart, the Association of Music Electronics Industry (AMEI), to finalize the core features of the MIDI 2.0 format.
