Canon UK encourages youth creativity and sustainable thinking through Creative Media Camp

London, UK - 29 August 2017 - Canon UK today announced ISM' and Tribe SixtyFour' as the winning teams of Creative Media Camp - two five-day events for 13-18 year olds, as part of its Young People Programme. The camp, run by Canon in partnership with the Ideas Foundation, aims to inspire and nurture youth creativity through interactive visual storytelling workshops.

Following a successful event last year, the programme was expanded to two events this summer, one at South Essex College and one at University of the Arts London. 41 students participated across the two weeks, attending workshops on photography, videography and animation led by tutors and mentors, including Canon Explorers, Simeon Quarrie and Clive Booth.

Clive Booth, renowned fashion photographer and filmmaker commented, The Creative Media Camp was a fantastic initiative to be involved with and the level of fulfilment you gain from mentoring is something hard to achieve in the commercial world. Thinking something you might say could lead to some of these young people going into a career within the creative industry is really exciting and I hope that my passion for storytelling resonated with the students.

Students worked in teams to create a video and stills related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which acted as a framework for their stories. The purpose of this was to provide an opportunity for young people to have a visual voice on global issues that affect their future and use visual storytelling to express their views on the need for change. The finals were then held at Canon UK's headquarters in Reigate, Surrey.

Tommy Kynaston, Creative Media Camp attendee said, Canon is a brand I've always liked and having the opportunity to go to the headquarters and pitch my ideas was amazing. The Creative Media Camp has been a great head start for the course I will be starting in September, as I've built my knowledge around how to use a camera and learnt techniques for taking a good image. I'm looking forward to using these skills in my future education.

The programme demonstrates Canon's commitment to its corporate philosophy of Kyosei; living and working together for the common good and additional events are currently planned to take place in other countries, including Finland and Poland, later this year.
