Award-winning Durban film stalwarts featured at Independent Filmmaking Workshop --

Prominent Scriptwriter Janet van Eeden and filmmaker Madoda Ncayiyana has been confirmed as guest lecturers at an upcoming filmmakers workshop in Durban.

The second Independent Filmmaking Workshop 2014 takes place on Saturday 29 March from 09h00 to 16h30 at the Albany Hotel in Durban, which aims to bring local filmmakers the exceptional opportunity to learn from experienced and established industry experts.

The Independent Filmmaking Workshop, formerly known as the Zero-Budget Workshop, is a developmental initiative between the Durban Film Office (DFO) and non-profit organisation, the eThekwini Filmmakers Association (EFA), which hosts monthly skills-sharing workshops that cover all aspect of filmmaking.

Said DFA Head Toni Monty: This is a not-to-be missed opportunity for budding filmmakers to learn from, engage and develop relationships with filmmakers who have created profitable film productions as well as having reputable brands.

Two topics will be covered at the day-long workshop, namely Three act structures and alternative structures which will touch on structuring a plot and creating a sequence in story development as well as Hero s journey and plotting which covers character development, emotional threads and audience engagement.

Together Janet and Madoda have more than five decades in industry experience and have much to bring to the table, commented Andile Buwa, EFA Chairperson.

Van Eeden is a notable expert in scriptwriting and has written 12 screenplays and six stage plays to date. She contributed her film project, A Shot At The Big Time to Durban FilmMart 2012, the annual film production and finance market, which is another co-project between the DFO and Durban International Film Festival.

The filmmaker is currently working as a script Writing Lecturer at the Academy of Film and Dramatic Arts (AFDA) and at the Wildlife Film Academy as well as a writer / director at Just Do It Productions.

Madoda has produced a number of award-winning big-screen releases including Izululami (2008), The Sky in Her Eyes (2003) and more recently Hlohla Hlola (2013) as well as various other film productions.

An acclaimed director, Madoda has extensive experience stints in theatre, television and radio, as well as producing and directing many documentary films.

Both filmmakers have proved that they have a wealth of experience, invaluable insight and the ability to share their knowledge with up-and-coming filmmakers, added Buwa.

She included: Moreover they have proven that as industry leaders, they can successfully contribute to the local, national and even international film industry, and as such we hope they inspire the young filmmakers to do the same.
