Jl Grey to Present ree Films as TCMs Guest Programmer on Tuesday, March 9-

Joel Grey, who won an Oscar for playing the Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret (1972), will sit down with TCM host Robert Osborne to introduce three of his favorite films as TCMs Guest Programmer for March. On Tuesday, March 19, beginning at 8 p.m. (ET), Grey and Osborne will discuss the post-war drama The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), the musical biopic Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) and the starkly realistic drama On the Waterfront (1954).

TCMs Guest Programmer showcase invites notable figures from such fields as film, television, music and books to program an entire night of their favorite films and present them on the air with TCM host Robert Osborne.

8 p.m. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) William Wylers classic drama tells the story of three soldiers returning from World War II only to face difficulty adjusting to life on the home front. The cast includes Oscar winner Fredric March, Dana Andrews, Myrna Loy, Teresa Wright and double Academy Award winner Harold Russell, a real-life wounded veteran. Joel Grey first saw this Best Picture Oscar winner as a youngster and credits it for teaching him about the damaging effects of war. I remember I couldnt breathe after watching it, he says in his interview with Robert Osborne.

11 p.m. Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) Greys all-time favorite actor, James Cagney, landed an Oscar for his against-type performance as one of early American musical theaters greatest performers and songwriters, George M. Cohan. Joan Leslie and Walter Huston co-star under the direction of Michael Curtiz. Grey followed in Cagneys footsteps when he played the role of Cohan in the Broadway musical George M! in 1968.

1:15 p.m. On the Waterfront (1954) Elia Kazans grippingly realistic tale of corruption and social justice stars Marlon Brando as a dock worker who speaks truth to power, with Eva Marie Saint as his girlfriend. Both earned Oscars for their performances. Karl Malden, Rod Steiger, Lee J. Cobb and Leif Erickson also star in this Best Picture honoree, which features a powerful music score by Leonard Bernstein. Grey finds inspiration in Brandos performance, calling him probably the very first really naturalistic actor.
