Harry & Meghan: An African Journey
Broadcasts 20th October at 9pm on ITV
An ITN Productions with ITV News
When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex took their baby son Archie on their recent Royal tour of southern Africa, ITV News at Ten anchor Tom Bradby was with them throughout.
Prince Harry has often spoken of Africa as his second home, and on their final morning in the Tembisa township outside Johannesburg said: Ever since I came to this continent as a young boy, trying to cope with something I can never possibly describe, Africa has held me in an embrace that I will never forget, and I feel incredibly fortunate for that.
In the one-hour documentary to be broadcast on ITV this Sunday, October 20 at 9pm, Tom follows Harry and Meghan as they focused on the causes and issues they care about most, taking a behind the scenes look at this modern royal couple.
With interviews from both Harry and Meghan, this is a vivid insight into their impactful work, their roles as modern royals on the global stage and how they balance their public duties with their family life.
Tom Bradby (voiceover): He's loved Africa and devoted much of his life to its people and problems ever since he was a teenager. But this royal tour and the film we made of it was a chance for both Harry and Meghan to give people a more concreate idea of the difference they want to make.
It began in Cape Town, a city blighted by decades of institutional racism.
Meghan (news footage): I am here with you as a mother, as a woman of colour and as your sister.
Tom (voiceover): After the early days in South Africa, we followed him as he trekked across the heart of this great continent promoting his mother's work and his own.
Harry (news footage): It's been quite emotional retracing my mother's steps, 22 years on. Let's finish what was started.
Tom (voiceover): It was a fascinating journey in all kinds of ways, uplifting in parts but also sobering as I gradually took in the pressure and stress he is carrying around with him, particularly surrounding the death of his mother.
Tom (interview): Do you feel at peace in a way yet? Or is it still a sort of wound that festers?
Harry: I think probably a wound that festers. I think being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash it takes me straight back so in that respect it's the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best.
Being here now 22 years later trying to finish what she started will be incredibly emotional but everything that I do reminds me of her.
But as I said with the role, with the job, and the sort of pressures that come with that I get reminded of the bad stuff, unfortunately.
Tom (voiceover): His great fear now is that his wife is subject to the same pressures as his mother was.
Later in the programme I was to speak to Meghan too about the difficulties of living life in the spotlight.
That's all in Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, this Sunday at 9pm on ITV.
