In fond memory of Ron Silveira

It is with great sadness that the HPA has learned of the passing of one of our community's leaders, Ron Silveira. Please hold Ron in your thoughts and prayers. Our most sincere condolences to his dedicated wife and companion, Annaliz and to his family. It is with fond memories and appreciation for his tireless contributions that I pass along this remembrance which appears in the Hollywood Reporter written by HPA Board Member and journalist Carolyn Giardina.

Postproduction Industry Veteran Ron Silveira Dies

The postproduction pioneer held roles at companies including Universal Studios, The Post Group, Compact Video and Unitel.

Ron Silveira, a well-known and well-liked veteran of the postproduction community in Hollywood, died June 20 after a battle with cancer.

He most recently served as V.P. Universal Studios Digital Services for NBCUniversal, which he joined in 2004. Earlier, Silveira spent nine years as COO of The Post Group, where he was responsible for the visual effects division and the digital film group as well as formed its design group, Momentum Lab. While there, Silveira contributed to the development of HD and digital-cinema services at a time when the post industry was going through rapid technological change.

Ron was probably the kindest man in post, said longtime colleague Loren Nielsen, co-founder and president of Entertainment Technology Consultants. His clients, employees and colleagues all adored him. Not only was he committed to getting the job done, he was committed to making everyone around him feel good. He could always be counted on for words of advice, an introduction to colleagues and support for industry events.

He was also a pioneer. He was involved with establishing the first nonlinear editing systems, and it was in 1996, while at The Post Group, that he first tested targeting projectors in his telecine suites, creating the earliest digital cinema images of the modern era.

Earlier, Silveira served as president of Compact Video/Image Transform and president of Unitel. He was a member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and a past president of former postproduction trade association ITS' Southern California chapter.

Silveira received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and his MBA from Willamette University in Salem, Ore.

Survivors include his wife, Annaliz, and a brother.

Ron WAS one of the nicest Presidents of a Post Facility that I ever met or did business with. He always had great advice fro me as well as helping me become active in ITS. When ever we ran into each other at Industry Functions we compared ski resort conditions and he told me great stories of when he was a Ski Instructor in Sun Valley. I imagine him to be the epitome of a great skiing, virile, athletic, handsome and FUN Ski Instructor in the 70 s (or was it 60 s?). I will miss chatting with him when he dined next-door to my Creative Handbook office at Prosecco Trattoria. I will miss him and his smiling face dearly!

Ron was my friend and mentor for over the past 30 years, I worked with Ron at Compact Video then again at The Post Group. I will never forget him and his contributions to the industry.
