Telef nica on Tuesday presented an innovation project pioneer in Spain based on the plastic optical fiber (POF - Plastic Optical Fiber), a solution for home connectivity for simple installation and guaranteeing up to 1Gbps to customers.

In addition, also with the aim of optimizing connectivity, Telef nica has shown the possibilities of the Wifi technology of 60 GHz which offers theoretical connectivities of up to 4600 Mbps.

Plastic optical fiber is a 1mm core fiber and 2. 2 mm in diameter in total offering connectivity within the home through a simple installation (cut with a cutter), without connectors and at a cost much lower than the of the fiberglass. For installation is without having any risk or inconvenience and is certain not to be intercepted and immune to interference.

Telef nica has made a pilot of plastic optical fiber in about 30 homes with up to four sockets of fiber in each one of them with an array of hybrid network (backbone cabling) POF + amplifier Smart Wifi wireless access point to extend coverage.

The technological partner of Telef nica in this initiative is the provider of the chipset, KDPOF, a Spanish startup whose technology has become the standard Ethernet over plastic optical fiber according to the IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and ETSI (The European Telecommunications Standards Institute).

Los elementos b sicos de la instalaci n, adem s de la fibra de pl stico, son la roseta/media-converter y el chipset de KDPOF en su interior. La roseta mantiene el enchufe, proporciona dos puertos Ethernet y se permite conectar dos ramas distintas de POF.

Wifi de 60GHz

Con el mismo objetivo de optimizar la conectividad, Telef nica est realizando pruebas con la tecnolog a Wifi de 60GHz que permite un ancho de banda grande con un m ximo te rico de 4600 Mbps.

Esta nueva tecnolog a tiene diversos mbitos de aplicaci n como por ejemplo la descarga r pida de contenidos, el stream de video de alta calidad sin descomprimir, wireless docking o conectividad de dispositivos de realidad virtual.
