This industry legend has been a road warrior since the early '90s and is, today, a lynchpin on College GameDay
The sports-production industry continues to evolve at a remarkable pace, fueled by new technology, new workflows, and a new generation of leaders pushing the craft forward. Now in Season 3, our SVG All-Stars series highlights the innovators and decision-makers driving that progress. Through each conversation, we explore their career paths, leadership philosophies, creative and technical breakthroughs, and the ideas shaping the future of live sports production.
The energy of ESPN's biggest remote studio shows is unmistakable: the roar of a College GameDay crowd early on a Saturday morning, the buzz in the arena when studio hits air just prior to an NBA Finals game. Behind those seemingly magical environments is a disciplined operations team tasked with turning complex locations, large crowds, tight timelines, and big creative ambitions into immersive live television. Judi Weiss, senior manager, remote operations (studio), ESPN, has long been one of the trusted leaders making that magic happen.
As part of ESPN's Content Operations Remote Studio Group, Weiss serves as primary operations point of contact for remote editions of College GameDay (football and basketball) and traveling NBA studio programming. Her role touches nearly every part of the operation: preseason planning, onsite execution, budgeting, safety and security, vendor coordination, legal and business administration, PR support, technology integration, and team development.
A veteran of more than three decades in sports television, Weiss brings a career's worth of perspective to a corner of the business that depends on preparation, communication, and trust. From her early days as a runner on Live Aid to remote assignments around the world - including a memorable and challenging production of the Cup of Russia figure-skating competition in Moscow - she has built a reputation for steady leadership that has guided her since her first remote as a production manager.
In this edition of SVG All-Stars, Weiss reflects on the logistics behind ESPN's traveling studio shows, the urgency of developing the next generation amid a real crewing shortage, and why paying success forward remains one of the most important responsibilities in live sports production.
Weiss on the College GameDay set in Times Square in fall 2017 with Luther Fisher, her longtime operations partner on the iconic ESPN series from 2011 through 2021.What are the key responsibilities of your current role?
I serve as the primary point of contact for remote studio operations across several major ESPN properties. That includes remote editions of College GameDay Football, men's and women's College GameDay Basketball, and NBA studio programming when those shows are on the road, including NBA Today, NBA Countdown, and the streaming program NBA Hoop Streams. My role involves both preseason and in-season planning, working closely with onsite operations teams, production groups, event operations managers, and a wide range of internal departments to ensure each show is set up for success.
A major part of the job is collaboration. I work directly with onsite operations teams assigned to each event: several direct reports as well as specialists and operations producers from across the department. I also partner closely with production teams on planning, budgeting, and, at times, creative execution - especially on College GameDay Football. Because many of these shows originate from high-profile, high-energy environments, I coordinate regularly with safety and security teams, public relations, legal, business administration, production finance, and vendors to manage everything from crowd logistics and media support to contracts, Certificates of Insurance, and RFPs.
I also work with technical specialists to identify new technologies that can improve both the onsite production workflow and the experience for viewers at home. In addition, I manage and mentor a team of five direct reports, supporting their career development while also overseeing key operational details, such as financial reconciliations.
Weiss was key to the broadcaster's production of the arduous but successful NBA Bubble at Walt Disney World during the COVID pandemic in 2020.What is one key industry trend that you believe is having a major impact on your organization right now?
The crewing shortage is very real. Having been in this business for over 30 years, I've watched many of my mentors retire, and, sadly, some have passed away. I also recognize that I'm likely in the final five to seven years of my own career.
Because of that, I'm especially proud of what we've been doing on College GameDay when it comes to creating opportunities for junior members of our team. Over half of our technical-operations staff started out as runners or utilities on the show. From the beginning, I've been very clear with the men and women who join our team that I expect them to actively develop their careers and expand their skills. So far, no one has let me down.
What is one core philosophy you try to live by when managing your team/operation?
One philosophy I always try to live by is something that was shared with me during my first remote as a production manager for ABC Sports: Always be fair. It's simple advice, but it has stuck with me throughout my career and continues to guide how I work with and lead my team.
Weiss (fourth from left) celebrates with ESPN colleagues after College GameDay earned the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Technical Team Studio in 2019. It's one of 16 Sports Emmy Awards that the iconic show has won all-time.What is your favorite event(s) you've ever worked?
I've been working consistently in the industry since 1994, so cho
