US Hockey All-Star Hilary Knight Shows Us at Streng is Beauty

In the latest GoPro hockey edit, professional MVP, world champion and Olympic sensation Hilary Knight shows off her killer skills on the ice, and talks about pop culture's image of women, and how she's determined to shatter that image.

GoPro is fired up to share its latest hockey edit today of global hockey juggernaut, Hilary Knight. In the video, Knight underscores messages that are as tough as her sport in addition to her intense focus on capturing a gold medal for the US Hockey team, she's on a mission to overhaul pop-culture's image of women.

As a young girl, Knight learned her first lesson about redefining ideas of femininity and women's roles from her mom.

When I was five years old, I turned to my grandmother and told her that I wanted to play [hockey] in the Olympics, Knight reflects in the video. At that time, women's hockey wasn't in the Olympics and my grandmother pulled my mother aside and said Cynthia, girls don't play hockey.' The strongest thing my mother did for me? She looked right back and said, Mom, get with the times.'

Flash-forward 20 years and Knight, who'd established herself as the best female hockey player in the world, found herself caught off-guard when she was told that in preparation for the Olympics she needed to get stronger and faster and put on weight.

At first I was a little embarrassed about it. Growing up and the way the media portrays things, you are supposed to look a certain way. Muscles aren't feminine.

But after following a rigorous program she recalls being in a meeting where a woman inquired, with admiration, about what workout she does for her arms explaining that she wanted to get on that program.

And it kinda threw me aback a bit. Because I was like, oh my gosh, really? My workout? I kinda look like a monster. And then I realized that, you know, strong is feminine. Strong is beautiful. I think it speaks volumes when a woman can go out there and lead a healthy and active lifestyle and have a bit of muscle on her and not feel ashamed to be doing that.

GoPro salutes Knight's efforts to redefine the role of women in hockey and her commitment to promoting strength as the core of feminine beauty.
