Sky Italia improves performance, lowers costs 84 percent by insourcing its voting platform for live TV productions with AWS posted: 05/07/2023

With five million subscribers, Sky Italia is one of Europe's leading media and entertainment companies and the largest pay TV provider in Italy. One of the biggest draws to the service is X-Factor, the award-winning TV music competition. A key part of the show is that the home viewing audience votes for their favorite performers, with the results tabulated and shared during live broadcasts. Given that viewer interactivity is the foundation of the experience, the technology driving the voting platform is mission-critical.

--

For 12 years, Sky Italia had outsourced its voting platform to a third party, which delivered a solution that was robust, well-tested, and reliable, but was a black box. So, given the criticality of voting for the TV show, in 2021, the team behind it began to explore the idea of taking the voting platform in-house to improve performance, lower costs, and re-architect it for use cases beyond X-Factor. The massive audience and social media echo would put Sky Italia's voting platform under the spotlight, so the new platform had to deliver robust performance, fault tolerance, and low latency.

We wanted to have a more generic platform, focused enough for X-Factor' but extensible enough to handle other use cases, said Nicola Cremaschini, Principal Technical Architect of Digital Properties, Sky Italia. In addition, in 2022, the TV show introduced temporary rankings on stage with the audience in near-real time. We had a very short time to get our platform ready to support X-Factor' live events.

With Amazon Web Services (AWS) managed services, Sky Italia was able to re-platform in just six months. It launched for the first episode of X-Factor season 2022, handling millions of votes per session while adhering to competition rules and providing near-real time ranking. Best of all, it delivered better performance and reduced costs by 84 percent compared to the previous single-purpose outsourced X-Factor voting platform.

What the voting platform needed to handle Each season Sky Italia delivers seven live X-Factor shows, one per week. Each includes three voting sessions. Votes start when the host from the live stage opens the session, and viewers from home can vote for their favorite performers before they even sing. Viewers can vote up to 10 times during the live show. The voting platform has to identify which votes are coming from each device.

For the 2022 season of X-Factor, Sky Italia introduced near real-time results sharing, in which the host shares the temporary ranking onstage with the audience while voting is still in progress, beside opening and closing results onstage as usual. This meant the platform also had to open and close the voting system in near real-time. Closed sessions are checked live by a notary who documents the voting results, with vote accuracy and quick responsiveness top priorities.

The new voting solution also needed to support three existing channels- the X-Factor websites, mobile apps (Android and iOs), and Decoder and Glass. Voters needed to be able to use the authentication service leveraged on Amazon Cognito for support in social logins and via the Sky Ad login. It was also essential that the voting platform kept the interface the same as it was when it was designed 12 years ago, as the API was essentially fixed due to the massive task that would have been required to change set-top boxes across the country.

Under the hood To support the architecture of the new voting platform Sky Italia uses AWS Fargate to manage underlying infrastructure and Containers to host the voting application, AWS Lambda to run code for applications without provisioning or managing servers, Amazon SQS for managed message queuing, Amazon Kinesis Data Streams to stream data coming into the vote services as events in Sky's ranking system, and Amazon DynamoDB to deliver single-digit millisecond performance at scale.

Trial by fire After getting approval of their proposed new voting platform architecture in May 2022, Cremaschini and his team set to work with an exceedingly tight deadline, aiming to go live for the first episode of the new season in October. They drove a series of pre-season tests with the goal of doubling the best-ever X-Factor live performance, which was 10M votes, set in 2020.

Cremaschini said, For the first live show, we had to be sure that the platform wouldn't crash under the votes of real traffic. In July, we performed a huge amount of vote tests and did even better than our goal. We reached 60 million votes in about 10 minutes, which averaged 75,000 votes per second.

The focus of the tests was anticipating the special X-Factor voting session called Tilt, where two contestants have 10 minutes to present their talent. All voting happens in that time period, so the sessions go from zero to thousands of votes per second at the start and end of the session.

But, as Cremaschini discovered, The value of time is relative. Sixty seconds was a very good result for aggregating millions of votes, but for a live TV show, it's an eternity. It's absolutely not acceptable. Between the season's first and second episodes, we had to fine-tune the configuration of services involved in ranking aggregation to reduce the time required to aggregate the last votes.

Not only did the team reduce the vote aggregation delay from 60 seconds to less than 10. Over the course of the first season, they also made platform adjustments to align information between the back office and email sent for final ranking, enable back-office ranking updates with auto-refresh capabilities, adjust nea
