South Africa take first ever stand at TIFF

The Association for Transformation in Film and Television (ATFT) is proud to announce the first ever South African country stand at Toronto International Film Festival 2014 in Toronto, Canada.

A delegation of South African filmmakers, which consists of emerging and experienced producers, will embark on a trade mission to TIFF. The delegation, operating under the South African Indies banner, will arrive in Toronto on the 4th of September 2014 and will be operating from the first ever South African stand at the festival made possible by the department of trade and industry's EMIA scheme.

TIFF has become one of the most important festival and market spaces on the international film calendar and boasts easy access to important players from many of the North American studios, and the rest of the world, as well as an impressive array of films on show. The purpose of the trip is for South African producers to showcase and sell their films and works in any stage of development or production, to forge co-production partnerships, and also to participate in a global market and develop new audiences for South African content. The delegation will also market the country as one of the world's top production destinations.

The SA Indies delegation has been invited to attend several networking functions, and will attend, amongst other programmes, SA/Canadian co-production sessions, panels and workshops at the market. Here they will interact with other industry players as a means of establishing professional relationships with key players in the region. They will also be taking part in a speed dating session facilitated by ATFT, where distributors and sales agents interested in the projects in the delegation's catalogue will spend 15 minutes with each producer getting to know them and their films at the SA Indies stand. ATFT is also proud to be taking as part of its' delegation the newly established black owned sales agency AAA Entertainment. They are taking as part of their catalogue exciting new local films such as romantic comedy Between Friends , action thriller Gog' Helen as well as groundbreaking documentary Prisoner 467/64 , looking at the personal costs of fighting for a country's freedom through the eyes of Rivonia trialist Andrew Mlangeni.

ATFT organised a series of Export Market Readiness' workshops this month for delegates in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth, , to prepare them in attending the festivalin order to make the most of their time in Toronto and achieve their primary goals there. Facilitated by the Toronto-based Hayet Benkara, with her vast international experience, having contributed to a number of prestigious festivals, she is well informed on the global film festival and market circuit. Benkara engaged in an in-depth analysis of the TIFF market with the attendees of the workshop, allowing attendees to benefit from her extensive network and knowledge of the global marketplace.

The South African delegation was further supported by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF)the Kwazulunatal Film Commission (KZNFC) and the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC).
