Story Highlights
On Wednesday, July 10 in New York City, SVG's Content Management Forum presented a full day packed with media- and workflow-management leaders from major sports broadcasters, leagues, teams, streaming outlets, and technology vendors. Developed by the SCM Advisory Committee and its Chair - Warner Bros. Discovery's Manager of Media Operations, Strategy, & Technology Anne Graham - this year's agenda welcomed more than 200 attendees, addressed the current state of the industry, underscored how the sports media supply chain is undergoing a drastic transformation, and parsed through key subject matter like on-prem and cloud-based storage and archiving, the rise of AI, orchestration and workflow-management tools, metadata taxonomy and ontology strategies, the search for the next generation of media managers, and much more.
More than 200 attendees traveled to New York City for the 2025 SVG Content Management Forum.
The day began with an overarching look at what this sector of the industry is experiencing. From media asset management and efficient storage to the ongoing transition towards cloud-based systems, the panel of seasoned veterans dissected a myriad of topics, shared best practices for navigating the ever-changing technological topography, and how to achieve seamless interoperability between various platforms.
The keynote conversation with NBC Sports' Director of Media Management and Operations Robert McKnight was up next. McKnight took us back to Paris for a comprehensive recap of media management used at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Tasks like ingest, metadata tagging, editing, archiving, and distribution were top of mind, so the network needed reliable systems to support massive teams across multiple locations. With the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games just months away, McKnight also previewed how the network is continuing to innovate its approach to meet this Olympic-scale production.
Afterwards, one of the biggest buzz words in sports video production was on the docket: artificial intelligence. AI-driven automation is transforming sports-media workflows, but the question of how organizations can leverage AI without introducing bottlenecks or losing creative control still remains. Experts in the field pondered possible solutions and explore real-world AI applications for metadata assignment, search and discovery, and clipping and distribution.
This portion of the community couldn't operate successfully without the help of critical technology providers and manufacturers. On the next session, this important relationship between vendor and end-user was examined through the lens of maintaining trust, communication, and appreciation.
Following a networking lunch, panelists presented the delicate balance of going on-prem, in the cloud, or hybrid. After rushing to embrace the public cloud during the early part of the decade, many sports-media organizations are now reevaluating their workflow and infrastructure and exploring more-private on-premises or hybrid ecosystems. With rising demands for real-time collaboration and remote production, sports broadcasters are considering the differences of being on-premises and the cloud. The panel offered the latest strategies for hybrid workflows that maximize efficiency, optimize performance, and keep costs in check.
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment's AI/ML Lead Ryan Khurana took the stage next for an in-depth look at how the company is leveraging Twelve Labs in their workflow. With an onslaught of content being ingested, Twelve Labs has allowed MLSE to transform their creative workflow. This includes being able to turn 16 hours of video search and retrieval efforts into a process as low as 9 minutes, which frees up the team's bandwidth to focus on other creative assets and solutions.
The penultimate presentation of the day was directed towards entry-level professionals and how they can learn and grow. Led by Graham, she emphasized the need for skilled media-management professionals and how it's paramount to recruit the best available candidates but also giving them chances to cultivate their talents and accelerate their development. The presentation also served up training programs, continuing education, certification opportunities, and room for mentoring.
To conclude the event, we casted our eyes on the future. As the industry makes 4K and HDR a more mainstream option and evaluates the integration of 8K into the fold, media companies are preparing for the next generation of sports content. Larger file sizes will double or triple storage, which will require these teams to standardize or at least limit the formats they must support. This session offered an update on the current storage-technology landscape to prepare attendees for the year ahead and beyond.
