The Bioscope Independent Cinema in Johannesburg has a diverse film offering for audiences this August.

UNEARTHED

Directed by Jolynn Minnaar who will attend the screening this Friday, 15 August at 20h00 Unearthed sees a young South African swallow her optimism on fracking in her Karoo hometown after a mysterious phone call from the US leads her to uncover the hidden truths of the gas industry.

Tickets will cost R45.00.

THE HIP-HOP FELLOW

By Emmy-Award winning director, Kenneth Price, The Hip-Hop Fellow follows Grammy Award winning producer, 9th Wonder s tenure at Harvard University, as he teaches The Standards of Hip-Hop course, conducts research for his thesis, lectures at Duke University and explores hip-hop s history, culture and role in an academic setting. Continuing at the Bioscope this week, screenings of The Hip-Hop Fellow will take place on 13, 14, 20, 24, and 25 August.

Tickets will cost R45.00.

SPECIAL COMMEMORATIVE SCREENING OF: MINERS SHOT DOWN

In August 2012, mineworkers in one of South Africa s biggest platinum mines began a strike for better wages. Six days later, the police used live ammunition to brutally suppress the strike, killing 34 and injuring many more.

Using the POV of the Marikana miners, Miners Shot Down, follows the strike from day one, showing the courageous but isolated fight waged by a group of low paid workers against the combined forces of the mining company, Lonmin, the ANC government and their allies in the National Union of Mineworkers.

The screening will take place on Saturday, 16 August and tickets will cost R40.00. All proceeds of the screening will go towards The Marikana Support Campaign.

BIG SIGNIFICANT THINGS

Directed by Bryan Reisberg, Big Significant Things follows 26 year old Craig (Harry Lloyd), who lies to his girlfriend so that he can take a road trip by himself to the south . All this a week before they move across the country together.

Starting on 29 August, tickets will cost R45.00.

NOODLEBOX CINEMA: THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM

The Forbidden Kingdom features a Kung Fu obsessed American teen, who discovers something that sends him on an adventure to China, where he joins up with a band of martial arts warriors in order to free the imprisoned Monkey King.

Showing on 22 August at 19h30, tickets will cost you R70.00, this includes a portion of noodles to be eaten inside The Bioscope, while watching The Forbidden Kingdom.
