DocFilmSA's docLOVE screening for March: Someone to Blame

Join the Documentary Filmmakers Association of South Africas initiative docLOVE for a free screening of the SAFTA-nominated documentary, Someone to Blame The Ahmed Timol Inquest, by director Enver Samuel.

The film weaves a compelling narrative that draws on the 2017 re-opening of the inquiry - after 46 years of waiting - into the untimely death and brutal murder of the young Ahmed Timol in 1972. The young activist died at the hands of the security police at the John Vorster Police Station in downtown Johannesburg, framed by the police as a suicide at the time.

Samuel constructs an intimate overview of an event that sets the scene for the families and friends of many other South Africans who died in detention during the Apartheid years to also pursue the truth of what happened to their beloved ones. The film been chosen to screen at the Vancouver South African Film Festival (March 2019) and at the INPUT 2019 Television Conference (May 2019) in Bangkok, Thailand. As 21 March is Human Rights Day, docLOVE specifically chose this poignant documentary to mark the belated justice for activists like the 29-year-old Roodepoort school teacher and member of the then banned South African Communist Party Ahmed Timol.

DocLOVE is an initiative of the Documentary Fillmakers Association that aims to provide an opportunity to showcase great documentaries on a regular basis, grow documentary film audiences and engage discussions. Sandz Tshefu our docLOVE coordinator in Khayelitsha says: docLOVE has become such a great space and platform for film/documentary lovers and film-makers in Khayelitsha. As the Khayelitsha coordinator and a Filmmaker myself, I have for a long time felt disconnected to fellow filmmakers. This has been mainly because we worked so far from each other but are actually next-door neighbors - docLOVE has given us space and time to really get to know each other and collaborate.

2 April: Guga Sthebe Centre, Langa. in partnership with Development Afrika Stratagem

3 April: The Bertha Movie House, Isivivana Centre, Khayalitsha.

The Documentary Filmmakers Association (DFA) was established to nurture and develop the interests of documentary filmmakers in South Africa. Documentaries tell stories of ordinary and extraordinary people and communities - they celebrate, question, investigate and reflect. The most accessible genre of filmmaking, it is often marginalised by the broadcast industry and by other sectors / genres within the film and video production industry.
