French pay-TV broadcaster CANAL picks up broadcast rights to producer M. Night Shyamalan's thriller to join the global day and date release.
Los Angeles, May 22, 2014: FOX International Channels (FIC), international broadcaster and sales arm for producer M. Night Shyamalan's new suspense-filled 10-episode event thriller, Wayward Pines, has inked its first distribution deal for the series with French pay-TV player CANAL .
The deal, which was agreed swiftly during this week's L.A. Screenings, grants CANAL exclusive first-window pay rights to the series in France. It also marks the first commitment by a broadcaster outside FIC's wholly owned universe to premiere the series day and date as part of the planned global launch during the 2014/15 Broadcast Season.
FIC recently bought into the FOX Broadcasting Company and FX Productions produced Wayward Pines and controls all rights outside of the U.S. In addition to broadcasting the series across owned channels, FIC is also directly managing all first and second window international television, non-linear and home-entertainment sales for the property via Simon Thomas, the group's London-based EVP of Content Sales.

'Wayward Pines' is one of the most exciting projects of the next season. It brings together highly talented signatures, cast and crew, and is headed by Oscar-nominated director and producer M. Night Shyamalan, said Aline Marrache-Tesseraud, Head of Acquisitions Department/Foreign Fictions, CANAL . CANAL will make Wayward Pines' available for its subscribers in simulcast with the US broadcast. This acquisition illustrates the strong commitment of CANAL into TV series prebuys and acquisitions and our continuing strength in the international TV series market.
Based on a best-selling novel by Blake Crouch, Wayward Pines follows Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Academy Award nominee Matt Dillon), who arrives in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, Idaho on a mission to find two missing federal agents. Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan further from the life he knew, from the husband and father he was, until he must face the terrifying reality that he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive.
Developed for television by Chad Hodge ( The Playboy Club ) and executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan ( The Sixth Sense ), Hodge, Donald De Line ( The Italian Job ) and Ashwin Rajan ( After Earth, Devil ). Wayward Pines stars a high-profile ensemble cast, including Matt Dillon ( Crash ), Melissa Leo ( The Fighter ), Toby Jones ( The Hunger Games ), Carla Gugino ( Watchmen ), Terrence Howard ( The Butler ) and Juliette Lewis ( August: Osage County ).
