Nigerian drama series goes global --

The third series of Shuga, a Nigerian show by MTV Base and the MTV Staying Alive Foundation which focuses on social issues, broadcasts to 550 million households around the world via 61 television channels and 12 online or view on demand platforms the show screens across Africa, Europe, UK, Asia and the Caribbean.

Filmed in Lagos for the first time by director Biyi Bandele, the series aims to raise awareness about HIV prevention and reproductive health, as well as other public health issues which the youth in Nigeria are facing. At the end of every episode the MTV Staying Alive Foundation will be display the 6222 helpline service offered by the National Association for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and from 1 December, a free Skype service will allow viewers to hear cast statements that expand on key topics raised.

Georgia Arnold, executive director of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation says: We and our partners are thrilled to see how the demand and interest in Shuga grows from year to year. As a vehicle for communicating messages about public health, as an entertainment experience, and as a grassroots teaching tool Shuga delivers on every level.

Alex Okosi, senior vice president and managing director of Viacom international Media Networks Africa commented, on behalf of MTV Base: Set in Nigeria but using universal themes, Shuga showcases the creativity of Nigerian writers, directors and actors. We are delighted that these talented individuals will get this mainstream opportunity on broadcasters around the world, using authentic Nigerian voices to paint a new picture of the continent on the global stage while fulfilling important public health goals.

As part of the multimedia campaign, the series has its own web portal, www.shuga.tv, a comic book and radio series in English and Pidgin, planned for 2014.

Secrets and lies, crossed wires and broken dreams are at the heart of Series Three which premieres on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) on Sunday, 1 December 2013 at 20h00.
