Human-eye resolution VR delivers 20/20 vision'

Finnish startup Varjo has developed its VR-1 VR headset, delivering a resolution of 60 pixels per degree, akin to 20/20 vision.

The headset uses Varjo's 20/20 eye tracker, designed to track eye movements by reflecting images onto the eye and tracking them algorithmically, using dual cameras, infared illumination pattern approach and computer vision algorithm to deliver an accuracy of less than one degree of visual angle.

This allows the headset to determine what the user is focusing on in the VR space, concentrating processing power on that area to create a high definition render.

Varjo is currently working with Audi, who are using the VR-1 headsets to design cars in VR.

Jan Pflueger, augmented and virtual reality coordinator for Audi said As a designer, it is very important to see all the details and to also see the interplay between the different materials. The higher resolution of the display enables us for the first time to start at an early stage, using virtual techniques and that's closing a big gap.

He added With this high resolution, you are able to get fully immersed, so there's a seamless transfer between the real world and the virtual world and for me, that's the future of virtual reality.

The VR-1 can be integrated into existing IT environments, able to be run on a Windows 10 laptop with a minimum GTX 1080 GPU or a desktop PC.

The headset is also compatible with Steam VR base stations 1.0 and 2.0 as well as ART tracking technology.
