For the past 4 months, 10 students from NC Central University have been interning in Capitol Broadcasting divisions through the inaugural Emerging Leaders Program. A partnership between CBC and Leadership Triangle, the program combines hands on learning in departments aligned to their interests along with workshops led by LT coaches. The program will culminate with a graduation ceremony on December 16. In the final weeks leading up to that conclusion, Capcom is profiling the individual outstanding students.
Zenobia Dowdy is interning with CBC Radio in the Programming and Promotions departments. She is a senior at NC Central, pursuing a major in Mass Communications with a concentration in Broadcast Media.
CBC Radio Brand Manager Chris Edge took over as Dowdy's CBC mentor when Sammy Simpson moved away from the company in October.
It's only been a short time for me, but Zenobia has been great, said Edge. She brings great energy and focus into the building each day!
Dowdy came to CBC Radio with an array of knowledge she had garnered from being involved in broadcasting opportunities at NC Central. She has been involved with both AudioNet, the studio radio station, and Central News, the on-campus television station. She also interned at WNCU 90.7 FM, the school's commercial radio station.
Being involved with CBC's various radio stations in Raleigh, MIX 101.5 WRAL-FM, 99.9 The Fan and other sports radio stations, and 95.7 FM That Station, has given her a different perspective.
We've tried to give her a broad sense of what's required to work within our industry but also specific tasks so she can take ownership of projects, said Edge. She's produced shows, archived Podcast audio, worked on promotions and really engaged with our brands.
Dowdy has been able to share her perspective with the staff at CBC Radio as well.
As much as I think she's learned about our radio, we've also learned a lot from her on how to communicate with our audiences! said Edge.
Edge says the Emerging Leaders Program can play an important role in his industry, helping students learn that there is a lot more to radio than meets the eye.
For radio in particular, we are re-educating people on what radio' is in 2022, said Edge. It's not just audio content. Interns will be surprised to learn they can work with our videographer on creating video for social, our websites/apps, and that audio includes podcasting.
