American Film Market 2015 - Market Readiness Workshop

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and The Association for Transformation in Film and Television (ATFT) are inviting filmmakers to an export market introduction and readiness workshop on American Film Market in Johannesburg and Cape Town. As part of their mandate to up skill our members in financing, distribution, sales and co-production, ATFT will host two workshops in two cities in preparation for American Film Market taking place between the 04th and 11th of November 2015 in Santa Monica, United States. The workshops are open to any interested filmmakers who are looking to find out more about this market , but are mandatory for delegates attending this years AFM with the South African Indies/DTI delegation. Any delegate who is going to AFM this year that does not attend the workshop will be disqualified from applying for any further markets.

The workshops will be split into two parts and the days programme will be as follows:

09h00-13h00 : The morning session is an introduction to ATFT and how delegations work, as well as the DTI EMIA scheme used to finance the delegations to attend these markets and how to apply through ATFT or as individual companies through the Individual Exhibitor scheme and be part of the South African Indies delegation to this event. That will be followed by an introduction to American Film Market and is for anyone who has never attended the market before. The facilitator will look at general orientation at the market and the background and mandate of this market, as well as how to pitch and package your project for American Film Market in general.

13h00-14h00 : Lunch (ONLY FOR THOSE THAT RSVPD BEFORE OCTOBER 10TH)

14h00-16h00 : The afternoon session is for delegates only and will be a one on one meeting with the facilitator, a very experienced and Emmy Award winning television producer.

The American Film Market sessions will be facilitated by Jonathan Smith an Emmy Award winning Producer. Jonathan Lee Smith (Jon Smith) has worked in the entertainment industry for over 16 years. He has worked on multiple TV shows and Films on over 4 continents including, COC Elite (G4), Caribbean Comedy Classic (BET), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC), Roommate Wanted (Lionsgate) and Pop This Way (Mnet), to name a few.

Smith has since become a Showrunner and is the founder of Hoplite Entertainment. Working on unscripted, animated, narrative, and feature content, Smith is known for being very hands on with an aggressive approach to storytelling. Most recently he worked as the Executive Producer and Director for FOX Sports' Stable Wars: Del Mar, for which he won an Emmy as a producer. He has produced 7 films in his carrier, and is currently in post on the Action film Boone The Bounty Hunter scheduled for release summer 2016. Smith also maintains solid distribution contacts globally and has been able to successfully distribute every project he has worked on.
