Clear dialogue has long been one of the biggest pain points in post-production. From complex mixes to unpredictable playback environments, intelligibility sometimes suffers, leaving audiences frustrated and engineers second-guessing their work.

NUGEN Audio's new DialogCheck plug-in tackles this challenge head-on, offering a practical, objective way to measure dialogue clarity. At the heart of this innovation is a partnership with Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT), whose Oldenburg Branch developed the Listening Effort Meter (LE-Meter) the scientific backbone of the tool.

Traditional loudness meters can't capture how hard a listener must work to follow speech. Fraunhofer's LE-Meter changes that, using automatic speech recognition (ASR) and psychoacoustic modeling to estimate listening effort. The result is a far more realistic reflection of how audiences actually perceive dialogue, even in dense or noisy mixes.

Validated by rigorous listening tests, the LE-Meter ensures that DialogCheck provides data that matches real-world perception not just what an engineer hears in a controlled studio.

Practical Tools for Everyday Workflows

While its intended purpose is in the editing room, DialogCheck will prove beneficial to productions that were faced with difficult filming locations. By evaluating takes where dialogue capture might have been less pristine, DialogCheck is able to help editors quickly identify which recordings are most intelligible and therefore best suited for inclusion in the final cut.

DialogCheck doesn't process audio but rather measures it. Within a DAW, engineers can see real-time and historical clarity data, use bar meters and timeline graphs and export reports for editorial review or compliance documentation. The tool becomes especially valuable when working under tight deadlines, comparing multiple mixes or delivering to broadcast and streaming platforms that require clarity thresholds.

It's equally useful upstream. For example, during pre-production, engineers can test mic placement and room acoustics, while in live-to-air workflows, it acts as a final check before broadcast or master delivery. DialogCheck also supports accessibility efforts, helping ensure spoken content remains intelligible for diverse audiences, including those listening on mobile devices or with hearing challenges.

Importantly, DialogCheck doesn't restrict artistic choices. Sound designers can still bury dialogue for dramatic effect, but now, they'll know exactly how that decision impacts intelligibility. By quantifying listening effort, the tool bridges creative freedom with technical assurance.
